Rep. Jasmine Crockett slams Trump’s visa policies — and calls out Melania’s modeling past as grounds for “Einstein” status

Melania Trump’s controversial EB-1 “Einstein” visa lit up Capitol Hill on Wednesday, as fiery remarks from Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) turned a routine House Judiciary hearing into a spectacle of jabs, sarcasm, and pointed criticism of the Trump administration’s immigration legacy.

The hearing, officially focused on reforming the U.S. visa process, quickly veered into political theater as Crockett zeroed in on what she called the “hypocrisy” of Republican outrage over immigration — while seemingly ignoring how the first lady scored a coveted visa typically reserved for Nobel laureates, top scientists, and Olympic athletes.

“We’re yanking lawful visa holders off the streets and tossing them into unmarked vans,” Crockett said, slamming Trump-era travel bans and what she described as retaliatory visa revocations based on political speech. “But no one wants to talk about the visas handed out to the president’s own family?”

Then came the mic-drop moment.

“Melania Trump got an Einstein visa. An Einstein visa,” Crockett said, incredulously. “That’s for people with extraordinary ability—like Pulitzer winners, Olympic gold medalists, or Nobel Prize recipients. Remind me when the first lady did any of that?”

Crockett pulled no punches, referencing Melania’s history as a model, including her infamous nude photo shoot for GQ in 2000. “Look, when I say ‘model,’ I’m not talking about Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell, or Cindy Crawford-level success,” she added. “Let’s be real.”

“It doesn’t take an Einstein to see the math ain’t mathin’,” she concluded, drawing laughter and groans from the hearing room.

The comment ignited swift pushback from Alex Nowrasteh, vice president of economic and social policy at the libertarian Cato Institute. Sitting just a few feet away, he offered a sarcastic defense of Melania: “Not everyone could marry Donald Trump. I think that’s quite an achievement in itself.”

Crockett fired back instantly: “You’re right about that. I definitely couldn’t have done it.”

The exchange quickly spread across social media, where the hashtag #EinsteinVisa trended as users debated whether Melania’s immigration status had ever passed the public smell test.

Melania Trump entered the U.S. from Slovenia in the mid-1990s and received her EB-1 green card in 2001. The EB-1 visa category — often nicknamed the “Einstein visa” — is intended for immigrants who demonstrate “extraordinary ability” in their field, a high bar that typically includes major international awards, scholarly contributions, or global recognition.

At the time, immigration experts widely questioned how Melania, whose modeling career was primarily based in the U.S. and not marked by major accolades, qualified for the prestigious visa. The Trump White House offered no public documentation.

Though Melania Trump has largely kept a low profile during her husband’s 2025 re-election campaign, she made headlines earlier this month for a string of appearances — and one very awkward moment.

After walking the red carpet at Les Misérables at the Kennedy Center and appearing at the annual White House congressional picnic, she attended the U.S. Army’s 250th Anniversary Parade on June 14 — also Donald Trump’s 79th birthday. Critics accused her of nodding off during the event.

Her most recent public message? A patriotic Instagram post celebrating a newly unveiled American flag installation on the White House lawn.

Meanwhile, Democrats like Crockett say they’re done ignoring what they see as blatant double standards.

“You can’t scream about immigration abuse,” Crockett said, “and then pretend your own house didn’t get in through the back door.”
