For the first time since taking the papal throne, American-born Pope Leo XIV is openly confronting President Donald Trump’s war strategy—delivering a searing rebuke of the latest U.S. military strike on Iran.
During his Sunday address in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo condemned Trump’s decision to bomb Iran’s nuclear sites, describing the attack as a reckless step toward global disaster. “Alarming news continues to emerge from the Middle East, especially from Iran,” the pontiff said, calling for a “cry for peace” that “cannot be drowned out by the din of weapons or the rhetoric that incites conflict.”
Leo, formerly Chicago-born Cardinal Robert Prevost, told tens of thousands of followers, “Every member of the international community has a moral responsibility to stop the tragedy of war before it becomes an irreparable chasm. There are no ‘distant’ conflicts when human dignity is at stake.”
A Pope Unafraid of Politics
This is not the first time Leo has tangled with Trump. Even before ascending to the Vatican, Leo made headlines for his sharp criticism of Trump’s hardline immigration policies and for penning viral op-eds lambasting both Trump and Vice President JD Vance. “Wherever a journalist is silenced, the democratic soul of a country is weakened,” Leo said Saturday—widely seen as a direct jab at Trump’s ongoing battles with the press.
While President Trump ordered the joint U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities late Saturday—using B-2 bombers and so-called “bunker-busting” bombs—global outrage has been swift. Iran’s leaders immediately threatened “everlasting consequences,” while Democratic lawmakers at home blasted the administration for “escalating a catastrophe.”
The White House refused to comment on the pope’s statements, but the silence only amplified the controversy.
A Call to Conscience
Leo’s message was clear: “War does not solve problems; on the contrary, it amplifies them and inflicts deep wounds on the history of peoples, which take generations to heal. No armed victory can compensate for the pain of mothers, the fear of children, or stolen futures. May diplomacy silence the weapons! May nations chart their futures with works of peace, not with violence and bloodstained conflicts!”
Since his election last month, Leo has repeatedly urged world leaders to pursue dialogue and diplomacy—from Ukraine to Gaza. His predecessor, Pope Francis, also criticized the current administration’s approach to immigration and foreign conflict.
America at a Crossroads
With this latest crisis, the new pope is signaling to the world—and especially to Americans—that the path forward should be guided by compassion, justice, and restraint, not bombs and bravado.
“In this moment of peril, America must ask itself: What kind of world do we want to lead?” Leo warned. “History will remember those who chose peace.”
As Washington weighs its next move and the world holds its breath, Pope Leo’s words are resonating far beyond Vatican walls—urging Americans to demand peace, not endless war.

Pope stay
Pope Leo- President Trump does not want war and tried to negotiate a peace deal. You have your information wrong, it was Iran that continued to say “Death to America”. Finally, when the call for peace was not accepted by Iran by negotiation with the U.S. the President took out the threat of nuclear war to Israel, the United States and the rest of the world. Why haven’t you called for Iran to give up their continued development of nuclear materials over and above what they said was for peaceful purposes?
What dear Pope would you say if the Rogue regime in Iran that is committed to the destruction of both Israel and the US if they actually managed to get nuclear weapons? C
This Pope is out of sync, besides he’s probably young enough to be the false prophet written about in the 13 th chapter of the book of Revelation? And from Chicago to boot, very left leaning Socialist, Marxist, Communist sympathizer!
TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Perhaps the Pope should focus his attention on things spiritual rather than engaging in political activism which benefits by no means the United States nor his beliefs. Iran with a nuclear weapon and as radical as they are shame on the pope. The president has a responsibility to protect the homeland. Thank you President Trump.
The pope should be happy president trump is keeping the world safe from these radicals. I wonder if he saw what happened in Syria a few days ago where they killed christians and if he was concerned. Pope, you do your job and let president trump do his job.
The pope is from chicago. What to expect from this man. Only hate for President Trump, not his policies. You are not God, who are you to judge.
