A Texas man got the shock of his life after discovering he’d been secretly married—without ever saying “I do.”

Beverly Hills police say the bizarre plot began unraveling on Friday, when a 42-year-old local found a mysterious package on his doorstep. Inside: a marriage certificate naming him as the groom.

“I thought it was some kind of joke or scam,” the stunned man told investigators, according to Police Chief Kory Martin. “But there was my name, right there on official paperwork.”

The man said he had briefly dated 36-year-old Kristin Marie Spearman earlier this summer. The couple reportedly picked up a marriage license in early June, but broke things off before any vows were exchanged. That, he thought, was the end of it.

But police say Spearman had other plans.

According to Chief Martin, Spearman somehow convinced a pastor to sign off on the marriage—no groom required. She then filed the paperwork with the county clerk’s office, officially tying the knot, all without the man’s knowledge or consent.

“Frankly, we’ve never seen anything quite like this,” Martin said. “She managed to orchestrate a full-on wedding ceremony without her partner even being in the room.”

The scheme was finally uncovered when the man opened the package at his Beverly Hills home and realized he was, on paper, a married man.

Investigators, assisted by Hewitt police, tracked Spearman to a residence near Hewitt and arrested her over the weekend. She now faces felony stalking charges—a third-degree offense in Texas—and is being held at McLennan County Jail.

Police are keeping the name of the officiating pastor under wraps as the investigation continues. “This is still a very active case,” Martin said.

As for the victim, he’s left trying to untangle a legal mess—and a marriage he never agreed to.

“I just want my name cleared and to move on,” he said. “I never expected something like this could happen.”
