A peaceful protest in Salt Lake City turned deadly Saturday night after fashion designer Arthur Ah Loo, 39, was fatally shot while attending a demonstration opposing former President Donald Trump’s return to power. Police say Ah Loo was an “innocent bystander” caught in the crossfire when a heavily armed suspect opened fire near a downtown plaza.

Ah Loo, a native of Samoa and fan favorite from Project Runway, was remembered by friends as “a beautiful soul who used fashion to uplift others.” His death has sent shockwaves through both the fashion world and the activist community.

A Peaceful Protest Turns Violent

The June 14 protest, dubbed the “No Kings” rally, was one of dozens held nationwide in recent weeks by progressives warning of what they see as rising authoritarianism linked to Trump’s political comeback. Organizers in Salt Lake City say the event drew hundreds of attendees to oppose what they called “a creeping dictatorship.”

But shortly before 8 p.m., gunfire shattered the calm.

“We heard three sharp cracks, then people just started screaming and running,” protester Olivia Chen told a local reporter. “Someone yelled ‘gun!’ and it was just panic.”

According to the Salt Lake City Police Department, the chaos began when 24-year-old Arturo Gamboa was spotted by volunteer peacekeepers acting suspiciously behind a low wall near the demonstration.

Two members of the event’s security team said they watched Gamboa pull an AR-15-style rifle from a backpack. They immediately drew their own weapons and shouted for him to drop it.

Instead, Gamboa reportedly ran toward the crowd with the rifle raised.

The peacekeepers fired three shots—one struck Gamboa, and another fatally hit Ah Loo, who was standing nearby.

Who Was Arthur Ah Loo?

Arthur Folasa Ah Loo wasn’t just a bystander—he was a symbol. Born in Samoa and raised in Lotopa and Falelima, Ah Loo broke barriers in 2019 when he became the first Samoan designer to compete on Project Runway. He later returned for the Redemption season and quickly gained a reputation for his powerful Polynesian-inspired creations and commitment to body-positive fashion.

“He was proud of his heritage, and he made us all proud,” said friend and fellow designer Malie Latu. “He turned his culture into couture.”

Ah Loo had also used his platform to advocate for immigrant rights, LGBTQ+ visibility, and climate justice in the Pacific Islands.

“He was one of the kindest, most visionary artists we’ve ever had,” said activist Jonah Mata’afa, who marched alongside Ah Loo on Saturday. “This was supposed to be a day of unity. Now it’s a day of mourning.”

Suspect in Custody, But Questions Remain

Though Gamboa did not fire the fatal shot, police charged him with murder.

“Detectives have determined that Gamboa acted with depraved indifference to human life,” said Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd at a Sunday press conference. “His actions set off the chain of events that led to a man’s death.”

Officers say they found Gamboa wounded and crouching in a group of people several blocks from the original scene, dressed in black with a face mask and carrying tactical gear. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover.

No clear motive has been identified, though officials are investigating possible extremist ties. “We don’t yet know if Gamboa was targeting the protest or had other intentions,” said Redd. “But this was not random.”

The two peacekeepers who opened fire were detained for questioning but later released. Officials have not announced whether they will face charges.

A City in Mourning

The Utah State Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy to confirm Ah Loo’s cause of death. A makeshift memorial has already appeared at the site of the shooting, where mourners have left candles, fabric swatches, and handwritten notes.

“We’ve lost more than a designer,” said local organizer Talia Ramos. “We’ve lost a bridge between cultures. We’ve lost someone who believed beauty could heal.”

The Ah Loo family has asked for privacy but released a brief statement: “Arthur was light, joy, and purpose. His loss is devastating.”

A candlelight vigil is planned for Tuesday in Salt Lake City. Protest organizers say they won’t let the violence silence their message.

“Arthur stood for peace, for pride, for power through art,” said Ramos. “We march on in his name.”

    1. Go to a Democrat gathering… and die… Democrat junkies murder 75 people daily… this was just part of that… Democrats say it’s “normal”…

  1. Who is paying these protestors?? The CCP or Soros???

BTW who is Talia Ramos who nextgennews cites as a credible source who organized this protest yet doesn’t exist on google ?? Anybody know?

    1. The person paying for all of this is George Soros. He should be arrested and charged with crimes against the state along with his son. Maybe life in GITMO will wake him up to the fact that being a TRAITOR like he was in his own country will not be tolerated in America just because you don’t want some one as POTUS.

  2. The little bitch was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Security didn’t return fire, they simply opened fire. Yet they were released. The person that was armed should be charged with a misdemeanor and released. Charge the Ahole from security who shot him with manslaughter .
