What was supposed to be a joyful celebration of culture turned into a horrifying night of violence as gunfire erupted at WestFest in West Valley City, Utah, killing three people—including an infant—and injuring several others.
The chaos unfolded Sunday night at Centennial Park, the site of the annual multicultural festival. According to police, a confrontation between two groups escalated around 9:20 p.m. and quickly turned deadly.
As officers approached the groups during a verbal altercation, a 16-year-old boy allegedly pulled out a gun and opened fire in front of shocked festival-goers. The scene was near a cluster of carnival rides packed with families and children. The teen was apprehended shortly after, and authorities say he is the only suspect at this time.
Among the dead are an 8-month-old baby, a 41-year-old woman, and an 18-year-old man. Two other teenagers were injured in the gunfire, and a pregnant woman suffered injuries while trying to escape over a fence during the chaos.
“This is a heartbreaking tragedy,” said Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson in a statement released Monday. “The loss of life—especially that of an innocent baby—is beyond devastating. My heart goes out to everyone impacted.”
The suspect, whose name has not been released due to his age, has not yet been interviewed by detectives, and it’s unclear whether gang ties may have played a role. Investigators are urging witnesses who fled the scene to come forward, as key details remain unknown.
The tragedy occurred just one day after another fatal shooting in downtown Salt Lake City, where 39-year-old Arthur Folasa Ah Loo was killed during a protest. The back-to-back acts of violence have rocked communities across the Salt Lake Valley.
