Irish golf star Shane Lowry completely unraveled during the second round of the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club—dropping F-bombs, botching putts, and racking up penalties in a round that may go down as one of his most infamous.
The 38-year-old former Open champion lost his cool on the fourth hole Friday after missing a short par putt in front of stunned fans and live microphones. “F–k this place,” he growled, just before sinking a bogey putt that put him at 14-over for the tournament. And just to drive the point home, he muttered the phrase again.
Golf is hard.

It wasn’t just the profanity that had people talking—it was the sheer collapse.
Lowry shot a disastrous 79-78 over 36 holes, missing the cut and ending his week in Pittsburgh early. According to The New York Post, it was another in a string of on-course outbursts that are starting to define Lowry’s rough 2025 season.
Just last month, during the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, cameras caught Lowry flipping the bird in frustration after another failed shot. Now, critics are questioning whether the pressure is getting to the Irishman, who won the Open Championship in 2019 and was once praised for his composure under fire.
Friday’s meltdown also included a rare mental blunder that cost him dearly. On the 14th hole, Lowry picked up his ball without marking it—a fundamental rule violation that earned him a one-stroke penalty.
“Probably one of the stupidest things I’ve ever done,” Lowry admitted afterward.
Fans online were quick to chime in, with some sympathizing and others slamming the golfer for his lack of professionalism.
“Everyone has bad days,” one user posted on X. “But c’mon, you don’t say that twice on a hot mic.”
Still, others argued Lowry’s raw emotions reflect the brutal reality of high-stakes golf.
Oakmont, known for its punishing rough and lightning-fast greens, has broken spirits before—and it looks like Shane Lowry just became its latest victim.
