Former primetime host says the network panicked over her online voice and pushed her out after Trump’s victory

Joy Reid isn’t going quietly—and she says MSNBC never wanted her to speak freely in the first place.

In a bombshell new interview with Katie Couric, the former MSNBC primetime host accused the liberal cable network of trying to muzzle her social media presence long before unceremoniously canceling her show The Reid Report earlier this year.

“They hated that I was on Twitter,” Reid said bluntly on Couric’s podcast Monday. “I’d get calls all the time—‘Please stop tweeting. Get off Twitter. We don’t like it.’”

According to Reid, the network’s leadership was “terrified” of hosts like her communicating directly with audiences online without corporate oversight. “They want everything to go through Standards and Practices,” she said. “They want to control the voice. But platforms like Twitter take that control away.”

Reid’s revelations come as she prepares to launch her new YouTube show and podcast, The Joy Reid Show, on June 9—just months after MSNBC abruptly canceled her primetime slot in February without any public explanation.

A Post-Trump Shakeup—and a Purge?

The decision to axe Reid came just weeks after Donald Trump reclaimed the White House in a stunning November upset. Sources inside MSNBC have described the network’s post-election environment as tense and uncertain, with leadership pushing for a strategic “realignment” in the face of a changing political landscape.

But many aren’t buying the network’s silence.

“This was a purge—plain and simple,” former MSNBC firebrand Keith Olbermann said earlier this year. “And it was racial. Brutally so.”

MSNBC has since denied any racial motive, but Reid’s exit coincided with the departures of several high-profile non-white hosts, sparking backlash among media critics and longtime viewers.

Caught Off Guard by the Cut

Reid says she never saw the axe coming. “We had just won an NAACP Image Award,” she told Couric. “I was literally emailing with PR about how great it was, and then boom—gone.”

She insists ratings weren’t the issue. In fact, The Reid Report had recently been praised in internal meetings for weathering the post-election ratings dip better than most MSNBC programs—second only to The Rachel Maddow Show.

“We were told we were holding on really well,” Reid said. “The numbers didn’t justify it, and the explanation felt cold. Just very perfunctory, like they had a script.”

“I Was Already Being Careful”

Reid also pushed back against the idea that a scandal or social media gaffe got her fired. She claims she was already hyper-aware of MSNBC’s internal panic over tweets and was taking extra precautions at the time.

“There was this real anxiety about social media at the network,” she said. “They were constantly on edge about it. I knew I had to be careful.”

Was It About Trump—and Who Was Speaking?

While Reid stopped short of claiming that her criticism of Donald Trump got her fired, she acknowledged the speculation—and didn’t entirely dismiss it.

“I’m a Black woman doing the thing,” she said. “I’m saying the same things as Nicole Wallace or Rachel Maddow—but it lands different.”

According to Reid, Trump reacts more viscerally to Black critics. “It bothers him in a way that’s different. It gets under his skin,” she said. “And there’s a fear of him—everywhere. You can feel it.”

What’s Next for Joy?

Unshackled from network constraints, Reid is ready to speak freely again. Her new show promises “no scripts, no censors, no corporate filter.”

“This time, it’s on my terms,” she told fans in a teaser video. “Let’s talk—no edits.”

If MSNBC thought it could silence Joy Reid for good, she’s now made one thing clear: she’s just getting started.

  1. She’s not beloved! Or is that sarcasm?! Well, how can you love someone that seems to only be able to make hateful comments and criticize almost everyone you can think of. =\

  2. please ask her to move to Ireland with Rosie. She is the worst & obnoxious reporter ever.

  3. NBCs attempts to shut Reid up has a tell of knowing she was exposing them to liable. NBC know they had to get Reid back on a leash as she was going off the ranch. Now is the time Trump should unleash the hounds and file another big liable suit against NBC and shut those sons of bitches down! Now may be a good time to go after all the other vermin in the scum pond of NBC News!

  4. ‘MSNBC Silenced Beloved Host Before Being Fired’

Face the facts bytch; you were/are a racist, race-baiting, far left of center, not too intelligent, vastly overcompensated hack, with a career that only continued as long as it did due to being a DEI hire. President Trump’s election just made it easier for PMSNBC to surgically remove a few of their problems, and after all of that the network still sucks. Your podcast will bomb!

  5. She needed to be silenced, she spewed hate. She is not a journalist she is a propaganda machine for the left. They need to fire a few more. The ones that are advocating for world war three. If Russia does send a nuclear bomb , well apparently the people at msmbc will be giddy about it.
