In a story that’s rapidly unraveling, federal authorities now suspect a Mexican migrant arrested for allegedly threatening to assassinate President Donald Trump may have been set up—possibly by someone already in prison.

The Department of Homeland Security originally announced the arrest of 54-year-old Ramon Morales Reyes last week, saying the undocumented immigrant was taken into custody in Wisconsin after a handwritten letter was sent to an ICE agent on May 21. The letter explicitly vowed to “shoot your precious president in the head” at one of his rallies.

But newly revealed forensic evidence is raising serious questions about DHS’s handling of the case—and whether Reyes, a longtime undocumented immigrant with a criminal past, was railroaded into a sensational arrest for political gain.

Handwriting Twist Changes Everything

According to sources inside the investigation, handwriting analysis has ruled out Reyes as the author of the threatening note. Officials now believe the letter may have been written by someone already incarcerated—possibly someone looking to frame Reyes, who is believed to be a witness in an unrelated criminal case involving that person.

A senior DHS official confirmed the investigation is “ongoing” but stopped short of clearing Reyes outright. “This individual was determined to be in the country illegally and had a prior criminal record. He remains in custody,” the official said.

A Convenient Narrative?

The original story quickly became political ammunition. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem—who has been floated as a possible Trump running mate—seized on the arrest, praising ICE agents for acting swiftly to apprehend “this illegal alien who threatened to assassinate President Trump.”

“No one should forget that this comes less than a year after President Trump was shot in Pennsylvania, and just days after former FBI Director James Comey made shocking comments about Trump’s safety,” Noem said. “The rhetoric has to stop.”

But legal analysts and immigrant advocates are now warning that DHS may have rushed to judgment—and possibly endangered an innocent man’s life in the process.

Who Is Ramon Morales Reyes?

Reyes, according to DHS records, has been deported from the U.S. at least nine times between 1998 and 2005. He also has a prior conviction for felony hit-and-run.

However, it’s unclear why—if Reyes was under surveillance or already on ICE’s radar—he would choose to write a traceable, handwritten threat and send it directly to federal agents.

“The whole thing doesn’t add up,” said one Wisconsin-based immigration attorney familiar with the case. “He’s not some radical. If anything, this looks more like internal retaliation from another inmate trying to discredit him.”

A Chilling Letter

The letter at the center of the controversy reads like a powder keg: “We are tired of this president messing with us Mexicans – we have done more for this country than you white people,” it says.

“You have been deporting my family and I think it is time Donald J. Trump gets what he has coming to him… I will see him at one of his big rallies.”

That letter prompted an immediate nationwide alert. Reyes was picked up the next day.

Now, with handwriting experts casting doubt on the letter’s origins, Reyes’ case has become a flashpoint in the debate over immigrant scapegoating and political theater in federal law enforcement.

“This Is Bigger Than One Man”

Democratic lawmakers have so far stayed quiet, but pressure is mounting for transparency.

“This isn’t just about one man wrongly accused,” said Alejandra Gomez of Mijente, a Latino civil rights group. “This is about a government that’s all too willing to weaponize fear of immigrants and pin political violence on the most vulnerable people it can find.”

As Reyes sits in ICE custody awaiting deportation, the investigation presses on. But for many, the damage may already be done.

“If this man is innocent,” Gomez added, “then DHS owes him—and all of us—some answers.”

  1. That story screamed of being false from the beginning!! It was made up by the same people who wanted citizens to thing that illegals were storming the border to get into the USA! Why would ANY immigrant want to kill Trump or any other politician? Immigrants, legal or not, are interested in making a living for their families. If illegal, staying in the USA to continue working. As a really bad joke, if they wanted to kill a US politician, only the head of Homeland Security would come to mind. Even that would to big a leap!!! I have seen so many gross lies coming out of the anti-immigrant people to understand that they are nothing but racist, bad American citizens!! Dr. Schlater

    1. Well,
As this case unfolds let’s look closely at the suspect. He’s crossed the border 9 times illegally and has already performed criminal activity! Ask yourselves why would he need to cross the border so many times that we know of? How many times did he cross without us knowing? Was he smuggling illegals into the country I wonder?

If he’s such an upstanding individual why would he be involved with someone in prison who wants to frame him as this article suggests??

Crossing the border and entering the country illegally is a crime. On top of that he also committed crimes here! Who wants these individuals in our country?? He’s not here simply looking for a better life he’s a criminal! Undocumented migrant is just playing with words let’s call him what he is.. an illegal alien and send him home.

By the way nextgennews how do you explain this quote from your article “ DHS Secretary Kristi Noem—who has been floated as a possible Trump running mate..” wTF!!! Trump is already president and he can’t run again so how exactly is Noem being floated as a Trump running mate? How stupid are you people?

      1. Yeah, WOKE NextGen tries to down play his being deported NINE TIMES!
And Schlater writes his usual stupid stuff…

  2. Regardless of this letter, this guy is POS to start with. He had a criminal record and had been constantly sneaking over the border, so just because he isnt guilty of this specific issue, he is still an illegal who has committed crimes in this country and needs to first pay for the crime and then be kicked out.

  3. but, does he have something on the guy in prison? who may have been the one who sent the letter, then blamed this guy, hoping to get him hurriedly deported, to keep him from testifying against him. sometimes, people like that will get a special visa to stay. very complicated. we don’t know what his crimes we’re. could be 9 times known coming back & forth. and the running mate, lady, is trump has hinted at term 3 & since he doesn’t follow laws, who the hell knows?

  4. Soros will hire anyone for a price won’t he! Wonder why the Orange Guy doesn’t pull his green card and get his ugly A** out of this country then maybe there wouldn’t be any crazies left. OMG I forgot about the Communist Left crazies .
