An American Airlines flight from Connecticut to Chicago was forced to make an emergency U-turn Tuesday night after a passenger erupted into a violent outburst at 30,000 feet—yelling for help, tearing off his clothes, and throwing a flight attendant to the floor.

Federal authorities have charged 24-year-old Julius Jordan Priester of Wichita, Kansas, with violently interfering with the flight crew during a commercial flight—a federal crime that could land him behind bars for up to 20 years.

‘You’re Coming With Me!’

According to the FBI, the chaos began roughly 45 minutes into American Airlines Flight 1043, shortly after takeoff from Bradley International Airport around 9:30 p.m. Witnesses say Priester suddenly ripped off his shirt and sprinted down the aisle toward the back of the plane, screaming, “Help me!”

In a terrifying moment captured in a federal affidavit, Priester allegedly lunged at a seated flight attendant, yanked them up by the collar, slammed them to the floor, and shouted, “You’re coming with me!” as he tried to drag the crew member up the aisle.

Stunned passengers jumped into action, restraining Priester and forcing him back into a seat. But the drama wasn’t over—he continued ranting incoherently and resisting efforts to calm down, prosecutors said.

Pilot Declares Emergency

With the situation spiraling, the pilot declared an emergency and turned the plane around, returning to Bradley International. The aircraft landed safely, where Connecticut State Police and emergency medical teams were waiting on the tarmac.

Priester was removed from the plane and taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for evaluation. Authorities say he was placed under arrest shortly after.

A History of Violence

Federal prosecutors are seeking to hold Priester without bond, citing his prior criminal record. Court documents reveal a conviction for aggravated assault in Kansas and a parole violation charge.

“He poses a danger to the public,” prosecutors argued in a detention motion filed Wednesday.

Priester’s public defender, Josh Ewing, declined to comment.

Federal Charges Filed

Priester has been charged with one count of interference with flight crew members and attendants, a serious federal offense. A bond hearing is scheduled for Friday.

The FAA and FBI have both been warning of an increase in midair violence since 2021, with more passengers engaging in disruptive—and sometimes dangerous—behavior. While airlines have tightened enforcement policies, this latest outburst shows the threat is far from grounded.

American Airlines has not released a statement on the incident.
