Shooting Reported at CIA Headquarters in Virginia

A 27-year-old woman was shot by federal security officers early Thursday morning after plowing her vehicle into a gate at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia. The incident triggered an immediate lockdown and raised alarms in a region already on edge after a deadly embassy shooting in Washington just hours earlier.

Law enforcement sources identified the woman as Monia Spadaro, a Virginia resident with a prior DWI conviction. She remains hospitalized with gunshot wounds sustained when CIA security opened fire after she reportedly ignored commands and attempted to breach the compound.

“This could have ended much worse,” said a senior federal official familiar with the investigation. “We’re extremely fortunate that the situation was contained before she made it further into the property.”

The confrontation unfolded around 4:00 a.m. outside the George Bush Center for Intelligence—home to the CIA since 1999. Witnesses say Spadaro’s car smashed into the main security gate with such force it triggered a full emergency response.

Fairfax County Police confirmed they were called to assist with traffic control. “The area is now secure,” a department spokesperson said. “There are no road closures at this time, but we’re continuing to support our federal partners.”

The CIA acknowledged the shooting but provided few details. “There was a security incident that law enforcement responded to outside CIA Headquarters,” an agency spokesperson stated. “The main gate is currently closed. Employees should use alternate entrances.”

Not Her First Run-In with the Law
According to court records, Spadaro was convicted in 2021 of driving while intoxicated in Arlington County. She was sentenced to 180 days in jail, though that sentence was fully suspended. Officials are investigating whether drugs or alcohol were involved in Thursday’s incident. Toxicology tests are pending.

A former high school classmate of Spadaro’s, who asked not to be named, described her as “intelligent but increasingly erratic in recent years,” adding, “We always knew she had problems, but I never imagined she’d do something like this.”

Security Jitters in the Nation’s Capital
The attempted breach came less than 24 hours after two Israeli Embassy staffers were gunned down in front of D.C.’s Capital Jewish Museum. Authorities say there is no evidence linking the two incidents, but the timing has rattled federal employees and residents alike.

“Whether coordinated or coincidental, these events reflect a growing sense of instability in our institutions,” said Georgetown security analyst Dr. Eliza Rosen. “We’re seeing an uptick in individuals lashing out at symbolic government targets.”

This is not the first violent episode at the CIA’s front gate. In 1993, Pakistani national Mir Aimal Kansi opened fire on CIA employees, killing two and injuring three more. Just this March, a man armed with explosives caused a prolonged standoff outside the same entrance before surrendering.
