In a move that speaks volumes, former President George W. Bush is skipping a White House ceremony hosted by Melania Trump in honor of his own mother—marking yet another fracture in the frosty relationship between the Trump and Bush families.

Set for Thursday in the East Room, the event will unveil a new U.S. Postal Service stamp honoring the late First Lady Barbara Bush. But while Bush family insiders will be present—including Barbara’s daughter, Dorothy Bush Koch, and George & Barbara Bush Foundation CEO Alice Yates—President Bush himself will be conspicuously absent.

Two sources familiar with the guest list confirmed to The Washington Post that Bush has declined the invitation. His absence underscores not only his long-standing discomfort with Donald Trump’s presidency but also an enduring tension with the former first lady now hosting the tribute.

A Ceremony Drenched in Political Undertones

Melania Trump, who has largely avoided public life since leaving the White House, was expected to use the event as a platform to reposition herself within the legacy of first ladies. But without George W. Bush’s presence, the event is being interpreted by many as a polite but unmistakable snub.

“This is not just a scheduling conflict,” said a Democratic strategist familiar with Bush world. “This is a deliberate statement—meant to quietly, but firmly, distance the Bush legacy from the Trump brand.”

Indeed, the Bush family has a history of cold shoulders when it comes to Trump. George W. Bush declined to endorse Trump in all three of his presidential campaigns. And while he dutifully attended Trump’s inaugurations, his post-presidency remarks have often reflected thinly veiled disapproval.

At a 9/11 commemoration in 2021, Bush warned that “so much of our politics has become a naked appeal to anger, fear, and resentment”—comments widely interpreted as a swipe at Trumpism.

Trump, never one to hold back, later fired back with a statement slamming Bush for presiding over a “failed and uninspiring presidency” and declaring, “He shouldn’t be lecturing anybody.”

Bad Blood That Runs Deep

The friction between Trump and the Bushes isn’t limited to politics. Barbara Bush herself held strong feelings about Trump, calling him “a symbol of greed” in her 2019 biography The Matriarch.

Shortly before her death in 2018, Barbara reportedly told friends and family that she no longer considered herself a Republican, citing disgust with the direction the party had taken under Trump.

Trump responded in classic fashion: “She should be [nasty to me]. Look what I did to her sons,” he told an interviewer that year. “I hit Jeb very hard in South Carolina, and he went down like a rock.”

A Silent Message from the Bushes

For Melania Trump, Thursday’s event was likely intended to cast her as a gracious successor to the first ladies before her—especially one as widely admired as Barbara Bush. Instead, it’s turning into a quiet but pointed reminder of how divided the modern Republican landscape remains.

No comment was issued by Bush’s office regarding the decision to skip the ceremony, though insiders suggest that the choice speaks for itself.

As one longtime Bush family acquaintance put it, “If Barbara were still alive, she wouldn’t have wanted George there either.”

Do you think the Bushes are right to keep their distance—or should they try to unify the party?
