President Donald Trump thought he scored a diplomatic victory with his front-row seat at Pope Francis’ funeral. Instead, he was handed a stinging rebuke — broadcast to millions worldwide — from the pulpit of St. Peter’s Square.

In a homily that many saw as a direct swipe at the American president, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re invoked one of Pope Francis’ most famous pleas: “Build bridges, not walls.” A phrase that had become a rallying cry against Trump’s hardline immigration policies.

“Pope Francis incessantly raised his voice, imploring peace and calling for reason and honest negotiation to find possible solutions,” Cardinal Re said, with Trump sitting just yards away, stone-faced.

It was a searing reminder of the late Pope’s long-standing disdain for Trump’s political agenda — and a public moment of accountability the president could not escape.

A Feud That Never Died

The animosity between Trump and Pope Francis stretches back nearly a decade. In 2016, as Trump thundered about building a massive wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, Francis had issued a blunt moral verdict: anyone focused on building walls instead of bridges, he said, “is not Christian.”

Trump’s response was pure fury. He called the Pope’s comments “disgraceful,” accused him of being manipulated by Mexico, and dismissed the Vatican as an out-of-touch political actor.

Though a temporary thaw came with a photo-op visit to the Vatican in 2017, tensions never fully disappeared. Francis continued to denounce Trump’s signature moves: the withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement, the separation of migrant families at the border, and plans for mass deportations, which Francis called “a disgrace to humanity.”

Inside the Vatican, there was little doubt: Pope Francis saw Trump not as a statesman, but as a danger to the values of compassion and unity the Catholic Church strives to uphold.

An Awkward Stage for a Humbling Moment

Trump’s trip to Italy was meant to bolster his image as a global power broker. Instead, it exposed deep fractures with American allies.

Before the funeral even began, Trump found himself cornered by European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. All three pressed him to stop what they see as his reckless flirtation with Russia.

In a brief, awkward meeting inside St. Peter’s Basilica, Trump and Zelensky sat stiffly, exchanging tense words. Trump, eager to repair his crumbling image abroad, later agreed to a follow-up meeting after the service.

Still, the damage was done. Images of Trump being lectured by European heads of state — then implicitly condemned from the altar — painted a devastating picture of an isolated, chastened leader.

A Glimmer of Hope Amid the Chaos

Despite the diplomatic bruising, there were hints of possible progress. Trump claimed a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine was “very close.” Zelensky, for his part, struck an optimistic tone.

“We discussed a lot one-on-one. Hoping for results on everything we covered,” Zelensky tweeted after the meeting. “Protecting the lives of our people. Full and unconditional ceasefire. Reliable and lasting peace that will prevent another war from breaking out.”

The White House confirmed that Trump and Zelensky would meet again before Trump departs Italy, fueling speculation that Trump may be looking for a foreign policy win to counter the weekend’s humiliations.

Walls, Bridges, and History’s Judgment

As Pope Francis’ coffin was carried solemnly through the square, the meaning of the day could not have been clearer. It wasn’t just a farewell to a spiritual leader — it was a moment when the world, and history itself, seemed to pass judgment.

While Trump sat in the front row hoping for a photo op, he instead became a living symbol of everything Pope Francis warned against: division, isolation, and cruelty masked as strength.

And this time, no amount of spin could hide it.

    1. F evil WOKE NextGen! Vatican is surrounded completely by HIGH WALLS !!! Has billions of enemies! Has been attacked over and over.

  1. Peace through negotiations is exactly what Trump is trying to do!! Building bridges and not walls sounds very nice, however, no country in the world has open borders!!! Good must always fight evil and having open borders invites evil into the country!!

  2. Pope Francis was as wrong as you can get. He had high walls for protection but expected everyone else to face crime and like it I guess The phrase “Stay in your lane” I would be apply to him I was not and am not a fan

  3. THE VATICAN AS A WHOLE IS OUT OF TOUCH OF AMERICAN POLITICS. TRUMP IS RIGHT TO SEND ILLIGALS BACK INCLUDING ALL CRIMINALS WHO ARE WANTED IN THEIR RESPECTIVE COUNTRIE’S FOR QUESTIONING. AMERICA IS NO LONGER A TRASH BIN TO HOST ALL TYPES OF PEOPLE FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE WITHOUT KNOWING WHO THEY ARE, YET THE TAX PAYER MONEY IS USED TO TAKE CARE OF THEM AND THEIR CHILDREN NOT TO MENTION WITHOUT SKILLS OR ANY KIND OF OCUPPATION. SHAMING TRUMP IS NOT SOLVING THE PROBLEM RATHER PRAYERS AND SUPPORT FOR HIM TO ACOOMPLISH HIS AGENDA AND VISION TO MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN IS WHAT HE NEED. HE IS A GOOD PRESIDENT FOR AMERICA.

  4. The article is directed propaganda against Trump. The pope was politically out of touch in the real world. Each country has to decide for themselves if they want sovereignty.
Letting your country being over run is not helping the people of that country safety and well being. There’s many detrimental consequences to consider by having an open border.

  5. First I agree with the comments to this biased article. But here is some more to consider….

No where in this article or any other news outlet has it been reported with direct named sources who were there who said Trump was lectured by other world leaders! Pure fabrication!!!! But was reported even in this article that Trump and Zelensky has a conversation and announced additional meetings and both were optimistic about getting to a peace deal! That’s the real news and it was positive not the rest of this biased article!

  6. Vatican City has some of the strictest immigration laws in the world, with those convicted of illegal entry being banned from the area for up to 15 years. In May, 2023, Pope Francis approved the Fundamental Law for the Vatican City State. which tightened the immigration and citizenship rights. As of last August, only 618 people hold Vatican citizenships, and marriage and family ties don’t guarantee continued residency. The city was completely surrounded by walls in the 9th century, and while some collapsed over the centuries, no pope, including Francis, ever declared that the rest should be removed or bridges built over them.

  7. So he’s blind to the wall around Vatican City? The religious leaders in this world, live by double standards.

  8. The Vatican has walls, try and get beyond those walls uninvited and see what happens to you. That Cardinal needs to stay out of politics and worry about his own walls and bridges!!

  9. The US has never had “open borders.” That term is right-wing propaganda designed to frighten people into thinking thuggish foreigners are swarming in and taking over. Eating their dogs and cats. We need smart immigration policies, not the Gestapo grabbing college students and sending them to foreign prisons.

    1. USA had 100% Open Borders under Jokementia Bribery. Jokementia LIED it couldn’t be stopped! Trump has it down to 1%… and still slowing…

  10. This Pope was one of the worst Catholic leaders in the history that caused division among Catholics and Christians fractured the church!!

  11. i agree with fully awake. but, for all the people shouting about the immigration crises, let’s not forget the bi-partisan immigration bill that was ready for a vote under pres. biden. trump had it killed. mcconnell & many (most) repugs we’re for it, so it WOULD HAVE PASSED! except the baby, now in the WH, cried foul, saying he wanted to run on immigration. you people need to wake the f up!! it’s not about what makes the country better under trump. it’s all about the slighest kudo to him. along with the millions he makes off his worthless meme coin. that’s the perfect way to anon. bribe him. and, now he wants to pay for babies. what about the programs to feed them, which trump is stopping?

  12. A country without the borders is no longer a country! Even the Vatican has its surroundings!!! Just don\’t take this event to blame, blame, and blame! Shame on you!!! LH

  13. The Pope has no right sticking his nose in American policies and laws…NONE!!!
The Pope is a radical right progressive anti Catholic man!
Praying next Pope will be a trusted and true Catholic leader. Rebuke all of Francis’s changes !! Will never understand why he is called ” The People Pope” ??? He really wasn’t.

  14. The natives need to have more say who comes and goes in America They were here first and you voted for a president who has 34 felons against him .You all need to search why you voted for him maybe you are a brain washed people .God help America

  15. As a 66 year old Catholic your statement is the pot calling the kettle black. You just buried a Pope who wanted to bless same sex marriage. That goes against church doctrine and the Bible. And shame on you for turning a funeral into a political statement.
Maybe, as what is probably the richest corporation in the world you should concentrate on using more of your immense wealth to help more people instead of constantly asking for second collections from people who are already struggling to take care of their families. Until you do that then but out of our business. Especially, our President who is trying to fix all the problems the last several administrations have caused. If you want to build bridges we will be happy to send the 9.5 millions illegals/criminals the last administration allowed into our country over to your country (VATICAN CITY).
