U.S. Vice President JD Vance paid a quiet visit to Pope Francis on Easter Sunday, briefly meeting with the pontiff as he continues to recover from a bout of pneumonia.

The vice president’s motorcade entered Vatican City through a discreet side gate while Easter Mass was underway in the packed St. Peter’s Square. Vance made his way to the Domus Santa Marta, the Pope’s residence, for a short private exchange.

Vatican officials said the two met “to exchange Easter greetings,” with photos showing the Pope in a wheelchair, visibly frail but smiling during the encounter.

Pope Francis, who has scaled back many of his public duties in recent months due to health concerns, did not preside over the Easter Mass himself, instead delegating the responsibility to another cardinal. He later appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to deliver a blessing to the gathered crowds.

The meeting between Vance and the Pope was cordial, but it comes against a backdrop of clear tension. The two have previously clashed over immigration, with Francis known for his outspoken advocacy for migrants, while Vance—now a key figure in the Trump administration—has backed strict border enforcement and mass deportation plans.

Vice President Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, was also in attendance at Good Friday services in St. Peter’s Basilica just days before the Easter meeting. On Saturday, he sat down with top Vatican officials, including the Secretary of State and the foreign minister, as part of his broader diplomatic visit.

Though the Easter exchange was brief and symbolic, it underscored the complex relationship between the Vatican and the current U.S. administration—especially as policy differences on migration continue to surface.
