An active shooter incident on the campus of Florida State University (FSU) left at least four individuals hospitalized Thursday afternoon and brought a heavy police response to the heart of the school’s student life.
Authorities say the shooting began just after noon at the Oglesby Student Union, prompting university officials to immediately issue a campus-wide alert urging students and faculty to shelter in place.
“Police are on the way. People are asked to seek shelter and await further instructions. Lock and stay away from all doors and windows,” the first alert read at 12:02 p.m.
Local station WCTV confirmed that at least four victims were transported to area hospitals, though the extent of their injuries remains unclear. Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare stated it is actively treating victims but could not release specific information at this time.
Panic on Campus
Eyewitnesses described a scene of confusion and fear as students fled the area surrounding the union. Videos posted on social media appeared to show individuals running across Dewey Street, while traffic camera footage showed law enforcement vehicles surrounding the intersection of Dewey and Tennessee Street.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) confirmed its agents were on scene and assisting in the response.
“FDLE is actively engaged in the incident on FSU’s campus,” the agency posted on X. “We will update the public with more information as soon as possible.”
A second emergency alert was issued at 12:19 p.m., reinforcing the shelter-in-place order and urging individuals to contact 911 or campus police for emergency assistance.
Campus Closed, Events Cancelled
In response to the ongoing threat, FSU announced that all classes, events, and athletic activities scheduled for Thursday were cancelled. The university has directed students and staff to remain indoors and await further instructions.
FSU President Richard McCullough released a brief statement through the university’s website.
“Our thoughts are with those injured and affected by today’s incident,” he said. “The safety of our students, faculty, and staff remains our highest priority.”
Officials Call for Answers and Security Review
Florida lawmakers were quick to react, expressing concern over the incident and pledging to monitor the investigation closely.
“This is a heartbreaking situation, and we are praying for the safety of everyone on campus,” said Rep. Neal Dunn (R-FL). “We expect a thorough investigation and full accountability once the facts are clear.”
Some state officials have raised questions about campus security and whether additional protective measures are needed at Florida universities.
Investigation Ongoing
The identity of the suspect has not been released, and authorities have not yet confirmed whether a shooter is in custody. Investigators from FDLE, FSU Police, and the Tallahassee Police Department are expected to lead the case in cooperation with federal agencies.
This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
