A terrifying midair ordeal unfolded in Belize on Thursday when a U.S. citizen allegedly hijacked a small passenger plane at knifepoint, leaving three people injured and the entire flight crew and passengers shaken.

The suspect, identified as Akinyela Sawa Taylor, was on board a Tropic Air flight preparing to depart when he reportedly pulled out a knife and demanded to be flown out of the country. Police say Taylor insisted the plane be refueled and rerouted. The aircraft, which had 14 people on board—including two Americans—was forced to circle in the air for an extended time and nearly ran out of fuel before safely landing.

The chaos erupted just moments before takeoff. According to Belize police, they were alerted that one of the passengers had taken control of the plane. In a bold move, another passenger who was legally armed confronted the hijacker and fatally shot him in the chest, ending the standoff before it escalated further.

Three Belizean passengers sustained knife wounds during the incident. Their conditions have not yet been disclosed, but the airline confirmed they are receiving medical attention.

Authorities have not said how Taylor managed to board the aircraft with a weapon. Adding to the confusion, officials also revealed that he had recently been denied entry into the country over the weekend. It’s now unclear how he reentered and made it onto the flight.

Tropic Air’s CEO, Maximillian Greif, released a statement praising the quick thinking and composure of the flight crew. “Our pilots undergo rigorous training to respond effectively and efficiently to any situation,” Greif said. “Today we pause to recognize the bravery, skill, and leadership that brought our aircraft home safely. We are offering all available support to the passengers who were injured.”

During the tense moments in the air, law enforcement stayed in contact with one of the passengers via text message, receiving live updates as the situation developed.

Video footage from the scene shows law enforcement racing toward the aircraft once it landed, guns drawn and ready for a high-stakes confrontation that, thanks to swift action from inside the plane, never materialized.

The U.S. State Department is now involved in the investigation. Spokesperson Tammy Bruce acknowledged the incident during a press briefing, noting, “We are grateful—truly—that this did not become a mass casualty event. With over a dozen people onboard, this could have ended much differently.”

The U.S. Embassy is coordinating with Belizean authorities to investigate how Taylor reentered the country and how he was able to carry out the attempted hijacking.

As questions swirl about security and how the suspect slipped through the cracks, many are praising the quick thinking of the armed passenger and the professionalism of the pilot—actions that likely saved lives on a day that could have ended in disaster.
