In a revelation that could reshape how Americans understand the 2024 election cycle, a new political tell-all titled Fight: Inside the Wildest Battle for the White House uncovers secret Democratic efforts to sideline President Joe Biden—more than a year before he withdrew from the race.
According to authors Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes, top Democratic National Committee officials began covert discussions as early as spring 2023 to prepare for Biden’s potential withdrawal from the race due to his age and health. The planning reportedly occurred without public acknowledgment—and in some cases, without informing the White House.
“This wasn’t about disloyalty. It was about survival,” one Democratic official involved in the talks told the authors. “We had to be ready if the unthinkable happened.”
Death-Roster Drama in the West Wing
Perhaps the most jarring revelation? Kamala Harris’s team had a plan in case Biden died in office. According to the book, Jamal Simmons—then Harris’s communications director—assembled what was described as a “death-pool roster” of federal judges who could legally swear Harris in if Biden suddenly passed.
He never informed Harris, but made sure other aides knew who to call and when.
“Morbid? Maybe,” a former Harris aide reportedly told the authors. “But given the optics and the stakes, we couldn’t afford to be caught flat-footed.”
Behind the Curtain: Biden’s Decline
While Republicans hammered Biden’s age relentlessly during the campaign, the book claims Democrats were already questioning his ability to serve. Just two days after the debate, Biden attended a high-profile donor event hosted by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy. According to the book, staff placed fluorescent tape on the carpet to guide the president’s steps.
“He knows to look for that,” one aide reportedly explained. Even Biden’s “unscripted” remarks were read from a teleprompter.
“He didn’t look well,” write the authors. “He didn’t sound vital.”
