In a fiery speech that lit up the crowd at a weekend rally in Los Angeles, Congresswoman Maxine Waters didn’t hold back—blasting President Donald Trump over his controversial push to eliminate birthright citizenship and dragging First Lady Melania Trump into the spotlight in the process.
Speaking outside the Wilshire Federal Building on Saturday, Waters delivered a searing critique of the administration’s latest executive order, which ends automatic citizenship for children born on U.S. soil to undocumented immigrants. But it was her unscripted jab at Melania Trump’s immigration history that stole headlines.
“He Wants to End Birthright? Start at Home.”
“If Trump is so desperate to crack down on who deserves to be in this country,” Waters said to cheers, “then maybe he should start by asking how Melania’s parents got here.”
Waters continued, “We don’t know if her parents were documented when they came. Maybe it’s time someone looked into that. If he’s going to tear families apart, let’s see how his own was put together.”
The California Democrat’s remarks drew laughter and loud applause from a crowd frustrated with what they see as Trump’s ongoing war against immigrants and constitutional protections.
Melania’s Path to Citizenship: Legal, But Symbolic
Melania Trump, born in Slovenia in 1970, moved to New York in 1996 and worked legally in the U.S. before becoming a citizen in 2006—one year after marrying Donald Trump. In 2018, she sponsored her parents, Amalija and Viktor Knavs, for green cards, a process widely referred to as “chain migration,” which Trump himself has publicly condemned.
Immigration law experts note that Melania’s journey followed legal channels. But Waters’ broader point—calling out the hypocrisy in Trump’s rhetoric—hit home with many Democrats.
“Maxine is saying what a lot of us are thinking,” said rally attendee Rosa Martinez, a second-generation American from East L.A. “Trump wants to close the door behind him. But his own family came through it.”
Trump’s Executive Order and the Birthright Debate
President Trump reignited the birthright citizenship debate on his first day back in office this January. He signed an executive order declaring that children born to undocumented immigrants on U.S. soil would no longer receive automatic citizenship—a direct challenge to the 14th Amendment of the Constitution.
Legal scholars across the spectrum have warned that the move is likely unconstitutional and sets the stage for a major Supreme Court battle.
Trump has argued the 14th Amendment was meant only to grant citizenship to formerly enslaved people—not modern immigrants.
But critics say the president is simply pushing a xenophobic agenda. “This isn’t about law and order,” Waters told the crowd Saturday. “It’s about fear. It’s about division. And it’s about keeping power.”
DOGE Sparks Local Outrage
The rally was also a protest against the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a new agency created by Trump and tech mogul Elon Musk to slash federal spending—mostly targeting environmental programs, education funding, and immigration services.
“Elon Musk might think he’s the co-president, but we didn’t elect him,” Waters said. “And we sure didn’t elect DOGE to bulldoze our rights.”
Musk has faced increasing criticism for his growing influence in the White House, with some Democrats comparing his role to that of a “shadow cabinet member.”
A History of Resistance
Waters, one of Trump’s most vocal critics since his first term, rose to prominence in 2018 when she urged Americans to confront Trump administration officials in public spaces. Her message hasn’t softened since.
“This country belongs to all of us,” she said Saturday. “We’re not backing down. Not to Trump, not to Musk, and not to anyone trying to rewrite the Constitution.”
As 2026 midterms approach and tensions escalate between the White House and progressive lawmakers, Waters made clear that resistance isn’t fading—it’s only getting louder.
