A quiet Friday night in Las Cruces turned into chaos and carnage after gunfire erupted in a city park—yet another horrifying chapter in America’s long and bloody struggle with gun violence.
At least 8 people were injured in a mass shooting near the parking lot of Young Park shortly after 10 p.m., according to the Las Cruces Police Department. While the exact number of victims is still being confirmed, several were rushed to local hospitals, and others were transported to University Medical Center in El Paso.
Police have not announced any arrests or named suspects, but say they’re actively pursuing leads. “This was a senseless act of violence in a public space where families gather,” said Las Cruces Police Chief Jeremy Story in a late-night press briefing. “We are doing everything in our power to find those responsible.”
Authorities confirmed they are being assisted by New Mexico State Police, the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. As of Saturday morning, Walnut Street south of Lohman Avenue remained closed, and residents were urged to avoid the area.
Young Park, a popular community space known for its weekend picnics and family gatherings, became the latest site of a mass shooting in a nation where such tragedies have become tragically routine. Witnesses described the scene as “chaotic” and “heartbreaking.”
“I was walking my dog when I heard the shots—rapid fire, like a machine,” said Carla Mendoza, a local resident. “People were screaming, running. I saw a kid lying on the ground. This is not what our neighborhood is supposed to be.”
While conservative lawmakers continue to offer “thoughts and prayers,” critics say the real crisis is political paralysis fueled by NRA money and extremist rhetoric.
“This isn’t about mental health. This is about weapons of war in the hands of civilians,” said State Rep. Linda Serrano (D-Las Cruces), calling the shooting a direct result of “years of Republican obstruction on gun reform.”
Data from the Gun Violence Archive shows the U.S. has already seen over 90 mass shootings in 2025 alone. Many occurred in public spaces—schools, grocery stores, churches, and now parks.
Critics point to the rollback of gun safety regulations during Donald Trump’s presidency as part of the broader issue. In 2017, Trump signed a bill revoking an Obama-era rule that made it harder for people with mental illness to buy guns. He also routinely courted NRA support while downplaying mass shootings as isolated events.
“We’re living in the aftermath of a reckless administration that gutted oversight and emboldened gun culture,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action. “Communities like Las Cruces are paying the price.”
As police continue to investigate, the community is mourning and organizing. A vigil is scheduled for Sunday evening at Young Park, and local leaders are demanding federal action—not just condolences.
“This was not a random tragedy,” said Mayor Eric Enriquez. “This was preventable. And if Congress refuses to act, they are complicit.”

If Congress and law enforcement would go after sociopaths rather than the tools, like guns, the sociopaths use, we’d have a lot fewer incidents such as this one. There are hundreds of millions of guns in the US, and a very tiny percentage of them have ever been used for illegal purposes. The sociopaths, on the other hand, have committed many atrocities, perhaps more than one per sociopath, but we have virtually no laws regarding the tracking and control of these troubled people.
Archon is absolutely correct but the extremists on the left don’t care to do what we know works. What good is a gun free zone? Honest question since they don’t seem to work at all.
