Comedian Jimmy Kimmel is once again under fire from conservative media figures after a tongue-in-cheek monologue about Elon Musk, Tesla, and the political right triggered a furious response from CNN contributor Scott Jennings.

This isn’t comedy — these are marching orders,” Jennings claimed on X (formerly Twitter), alleging that Kimmel was inciting his viewers to commit vandalism.

The outrage centers on Kimmel’s Tuesday night joke about Tesla’s falling stock and recent acts of vandalism — a moment clearly delivered with sarcasm, yet seized on by the right as a dangerous provocation.

“People have been vandalizing Tesla vehicles,” Kimmel said, pausing for effect. “Please don’t vandalize. Don’t ever vandalize Tesla vehicles,” he added, as his studio audience burst into laughter.

But Jennings wasn’t laughing. He framed the joke as a sinister call to arms, claiming the left is using comedy to sanction violence against conservatives.

“The message from the American Left to conservatives is unmistakable: silence yourselves, or we will do it for you,” Jennings wrote.

Kimmel, known for his sharp criticism of Trump-era politics and right-wing figures, went even further the following night, responding directly to Musk and recent headlines.

Earlier this week, five Tesla vehicles were shot and set ablaze at a Las Vegas service center. Though no suspects have been named, the attack quickly became political fodder. Musk told Fox News’ Sean Hannity, “Tesla is a peaceful company. I’ve never done anything awful. There’s some kind of mental illness going on here.”

Kimmel didn’t hold back in his response.

“Let me see if I can explain it for you,” he said, addressing Musk. “When you pull out a chainsaw to celebrate firing thousands of people, they get mad.”

Then came the line that set social media ablaze:

“This poor guy. You do one, maybe two Nazi salutes and everybody gets all bent out of shape.”

The joke referenced a controversial viral video from earlier this year in which Musk appeared at a European tech conference and made a gesture some interpreted as a mock salute. His spokesperson denied any political intent.

Background: Musk’s Polarizing Political Rise

Tensions between Musk and progressive America have been building for years. Once a darling of Silicon Valley’s liberal elite, Musk has increasingly aligned himself with right-wing figures and causes — most notably when he accepted a role in Trump’s “Department of Government Efficiency” late last year.

His controversial cost-cutting policies, mass layoffs at Tesla, and open support for figures like Argentina’s far-right President Javier Milei have only sharpened the divide.

“He wants to be Tony Stark,” said media analyst Dr. Leah Bronstein. “But the truth is, Musk has pivoted hard to the authoritarian right. Kimmel’s satire is cutting through the fantasy.”

A Familiar Pattern

This isn’t Kimmel’s first run-in with Musk. In 2022, the late-night host called the billionaire a “piece of s–t” after Musk tweeted — and later deleted — a conspiracy theory about the hammer attack on Paul Pelosi, husband of then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

“Jimmy’s doing what comics have always done — punch up,” said longtime comedy writer Frank Conti. “If Musk and his allies can’t take a joke, maybe they shouldn’t be running departments of government.”

So far, neither Kimmel nor ABC has responded to Jennings’ accusations.

Bottom Line

Kimmel’s segment may have ruffled feathers — but the idea that a late-night joke is a call to arms strains credulity. Still, in today’s hyper-political media landscape, sarcasm is easily weaponized.

As Kimmel quipped back in 2020: “If you don’t want to be the butt of the joke — don’t act like one.”
