Actress Brooke Shields never expected her night to end in the bedroom of former President George H.W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush—watching Law & Order: SVU. But in a bizarre twist of events, that’s exactly what happened.
On Thursday’s episode of Today with Jenna and Friends, the 59-year-old actress shared a jaw-dropping story about the time she unintentionally barged into the Bushes’ private quarters during a visit to their seaside compound in Kennebunkport.
A Sudden Presidential Summons
Shields said she was filming in Boston when she received a very direct message from the 41st president.
“Excuse me, young lady. I hear you’re in the area. If you do not come to Kennebunkport, you are in trouble,” Bush told her in what she described as a mock-stern voice.
Shields accepted the invite and brought her children along for what she thought would be a quiet, uneventful visit.
That illusion shattered with the tide.
Flooded Floors and Midnight Mayhem
Later that evening, Shields went downstairs to grab a beer and work on a puzzle. That’s when she noticed water pouring into the living room—from the Atlantic Ocean.
“Water is flooding into the living room from the ocean, from over the rocks,” Shields said, her eyes wide as she retold the story. “I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I’ve got to tell somebody.’”
In a panic, she shut doors, tossed towels, and ran to alert someone—anyone.
Only one problem: the only people awake were the former President and First Lady, nestled in their downstairs bedroom.
“With the fear of God, I burst into the bedroom,” Shields said. “I just wanted to let them know their house might be underwater.”
Instead of being alarmed, the Bushes were… chilling.
“They were watching Law & Order: SVU,” Shields said. “Barbara’s in her dressing gown, and I’m mortified.”
But Barbara Bush, always known for her blunt charm, didn’t blink.
“She’s like, ‘Come in here! Sit down!’” Shields recalled. “She says, ‘George, maybe Brooke can answer this one. Who do you think did it?’”
“I’m like, ‘Probably the one you least expect,’” Shields laughed.
From Houseguest to Honorary Bush
After helping prevent water damage, Shields found herself between the Bushes, watching TV like part of the family.
“This is a moment in my life that was so special,” she said.
Shields also revealed that her connection to George H.W. Bush ran deeper than politics. The two formed an unlikely bond that spanned decades.
“I never had a grandfather,” she said. “Since I was quite young, he’d give me boy advice—‘I like that one. I don’t like this one.’ It was a very sweet relationship that I needed and hadn’t had with anyone else.”
Beyond Politics: A Peek Into Human Moments
While critics often remember President Bush’s policies—including his notorious “war on drugs” and the Gulf War—Shields’ story sheds light on a softer, more personal side of the man who once led the free world.
It also offers an unexpected reminder that even former presidents have plumbing problems—and apparently, a solid taste in crime dramas.
For those disillusioned with the current chaos of Republican politics and Donald Trump’s unfiltered style, Shields’ tale paints a stark contrast: an old-school Republican who believed in civility, humility, and—oddly enough—Law & Order.
