A longtime FBI counterintelligence agent who spoke out against the bureau under Trump’s presidency has been arrested at JFK Airport and charged with leaking classified information, igniting fresh debates over whistleblower protections and government transparency.
Johnathan Buma, a 15-year veteran of the FBI, was taken into custody Monday while attempting to board an international flight. Federal authorities allege that he printed and disseminated confidential government files while drafting a book about his time in the agency. He was formally charged the next day.
Court documents reveal that Buma’s manuscript contained sensitive details about the FBI’s investigations into a foreign nation’s weapons of mass destruction (WMD) program. Prosecutors claim he accessed and shared at least 130 classified files, some explicitly marked “Protected.”
Buma has long been at odds with FBI leadership. In January 2022, he filed a whistleblower complaint alleging “numerous acts of intelligence suppression” regarding foreign interference investigations. He also claimed the bureau retaliated against him for raising concerns.
His criticism of the FBI stretches back to Trump’s first term. In 2019, he reported concerns about Trump ally Rudy Giuliani’s potential ties to a Russian counter-intelligence operation. But, according to Buma, his superiors quickly shut him down.
“I was told in no uncertain terms that pursuing Giuliani’s links to Russian operatives was not an option,” Buma told Business Insider in a 2023 interview. “It was clear the bureau had a political bias in which cases they were willing to investigate.”
Buma’s defenders argue his arrest is part of a broader pattern of punishing whistleblowers who challenge government agencies.
“If Buma had been leaking information that benefited Trump, would he be in cuffs right now?” questioned Scott Horton, a lawyer who previously represented him. “This is selective prosecution at its finest.”
The FBI has not publicly commented on the case, but court filings suggest that authorities began scrutinizing Buma’s actions closely after he criticized the bureau’s handling of high-profile investigations, including those tied to Hunter Biden and Burisma.
Following his arrest, Buma was released on a $100,000 bond after appearing in Brooklyn federal court. His case will proceed in California, where he worked out of a field office.
The arrest raises pressing questions: Is the FBI cracking down on unauthorized disclosures, or is this another example of a government agency silencing dissent? With Trump’s influence still looming over the country, the debate over transparency, accountability, and political interference in law enforcement is far from over.
