A medical helicopter crash in Madison County, Mississippi, claimed the lives of three brave first responders on March 10, 2025. The AirCare Eurocopter EC-135 was on its way back to Columbus after a critical patient transport when disaster struck.

The Fallen Heroes

  • Dustin Pope, 35 – A dedicated flight nurse and AirCare base supervisor from Philadelphia, MS.
  • Jakob Kindt, 37 – A committed critical care paramedic from Tupelo, MS.
  • Cal Wesolowski, 62 – An experienced Med-Trans pilot from Starkville, MS.

Each man had answered the call to serve. Their careers with the University of Mississippi Medical Center began on August 14, 2017. For 29 years, AirCare had a spotless safety record—until now.

The helicopter encountered severe issues shortly into its flight. The pilot attempted an emergency landing in a field. At about 1:15 p.m., communication with air traffic control was lost. Witnesses reported a sudden, dramatic crash in a wooded area near the Natchez Trace Parkway. NTSB spokesperson Todd Imman explained,

“At one point during the flight, they ceased communications with air traffic control and communicated with base. We observed tree scratch marks that would be consistent with a rotor strike.”

UMMC’s vice chancellor for health affairs, Dr. LouAnn Woodward, stated,

“The entire Medical Center family is heartbroken over this.”

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves added on Facebook, “It’s a tragic reminder of the risks Mississippi’s first responders take every day to keep us safe.”

This tragic event shakes the very foundation of our emergency services. First responders work in dangerous conditions to protect our communities. Their sacrifice reminds us of the heavy burdens they carry and the profound risks involved in their daily missions.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are leading the investigation. A preliminary report is expected within 30 days, with a full report anticipated in 12 to 24 months.

In this moment of sorrow, we honor the memory of Pope, Kindt, and Wesolowski. Their legacy of courage and selflessness continues to inspire and unite us.
