Germany’s federal election delivered a shock. Conservative Friedrich Merz emerged as the next chancellor. His CDU/CSU coalition won about 28.5% of the vote. In contrast, the far-right AfD garnered roughly 20.5%, and the Social Democrats plummeted to 16%. Chancellor Olaf Scholz has conceded. The election marks one of post-war Germany’s most dramatic shifts.

On live German television, Merz made his stance clear. “My absolute priority is to strengthen Europe swiftly,” he declared. “Step by step, we will free ourselves from U.S. influence.” He added, “I never thought I would have to speak out like this. But after Trump’s recent remarks, it’s clear America’s current administration is indifferent to Europe’s future.”

Merz’s remarks come on the heels of incendiary comments by President Donald Trump. For years, Trump’s “America First” policies have ruffled transatlantic feathers. Merz’s decision signals a deliberate move toward European independence—a move many liberals in America find refreshing.

The new chancellor did not stop at U.S. politics. He sharply criticized Elon Musk for endorsing the far-right AfD. “Musk’s involvement is drastic and shameful,” Merz said, comparing it to tactics once seen in Moscow. This stance resonated with many who fear a dangerous flirtation with extremist politics.
AfD co-leader Alice Weidel celebrated the outcome. “We are prepared to work with anybody,” she proclaimed. Yet Merz’s words have already sparked debate in progressive circles.

Across the Atlantic, liberal voices have welcomed this break from U.S. overreach. “This is a turning point,” noted political analyst Dr. Lisa Reynolds from the European Policy Institute. “Merz’s commitment to European self-reliance echoes our long-held values of progressive internationalism.”
Meanwhile, Trump took to Truth Social. His tweet lauded the election as a win for conservative ideals, claiming, “Looks like the conservative party in Germany has won big. A great day for both nations!” His enthusiasm, however, contrasts sharply with the growing call for democratic accountability and transatlantic solidarity.

As Germany steps into this new era, all eyes turn to Merz. Can he deliver on his promise of a Europe that stands independent? For liberals and progressives around the globe, his win is a signal. It is a signal that the old model of U.S. dominance might finally be giving way to a new order—one that champions European strength and progressive values.

The coming months will reveal if this fresh course will reshape not only Germany but also the transatlantic relationship for a better future.

    1. They are Turks in Germany, NOT Arabs……That is similar as comparing the Irish to Guatemalans, they may have the same religion but some are not racist failed potato farmers and alcoholics…

      1. I do agree that Europeans must unite and assume the USA will not come to their help if Ivan attacks as long as they are rule by a Fascist regime and the President is a Putin boy toy
