Hollywood friendships are built on inside jokes, and Woody Harrelson just became the punchline once again. This time, his longtime friend and Cheers co-star Ted Danson called him out over a motorcycle accident during their podcast Where Everybody Knows Your Name With Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson (Sometimes).
The episode, which aired Wednesday, featured world-renowned magician David Blaine as a guest, but the real magic was in Danson’s sharp-witted storytelling. When the conversation veered toward motorcycles, Danson couldn’t resist reminding Harrelson of an incident outside his home in Ojai, California.
“He backed out of our gate, took it right off the track,” Danson said, laughing. “It took days before I could get the fence working again. Sorry, I had to bring it up.”
Harrelson took the ribbing in stride, but he wasn’t the only one with a history of two-wheeled troubles. Blaine chimed in with his own story about lending a bike to the True Detective star.
“In L.A., you can’t walk anywhere, so I use my motorcycle to get around,” Blaine shared. “Woody takes my bike, and the first thing he does is—boom.”
Danson, knowing where this was going, jumped in: “Puts it down?”
“Yes! Right away,” Blaine confirmed.
Harrelson laughed before recalling another incident: “Remember that time I borrowed his bike when I was working in upstate New York?”
Blaine interjected: “And then he gives me back pieces of the bike! I’m not kidding.”
Harrelson, still amused, added: “Oh yeah, here’s your mirror, it fell off. And here’s your tail light, also fell off.”
The ribbing wasn’t just limited to podcast anecdotes. Last June, Harrelson was involved in a real-life motorcycle accident in Los Angeles while en route to a joint interview with Danson on Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend. Attempting to overtake a Tesla on the left, Harrelson misjudged the driver’s slow speed—unaware the car was about to turn left. The crash sent him flying over the handlebars, resulting in a wrist injury.
“I think a ‘tumble’ is a fair term,” Harrelson admitted on O’Brien’s podcast. “I was honestly and embarrassingly passing this Tesla when I realized—too late—he was taking a left.”
When the actors finally arrived at the studio, Danson played nurse.
“We’re in the bathroom, and I ask, ‘You played a doctor, right?’” Harrelson recalled, referencing Danson’s early career role on The Doctors. “He goes, ‘Yeah, I also played a lawyer, so we can sue the guy.’”
In July, Harrelson revealed on Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard that the Tesla driver had berated him—until he removed his helmet.
“‘I know you,’ the guy says, ‘but I don’t remember your name.’” Harrelson laughed. “I said, ‘Woody.’ Then we were just laughing about it.”
Harrelson and Danson’s friendship dates back to their days on Cheers (1982-1993), where they played bartender buddies. Their real-life camaraderie has since extended into podcasting, with Where Everybody Knows Your Name featuring candid conversations with celebrities like Lisa Kudrow, Jeff Bridges, Quinta Brunson, and Bill Hader.
While Harrelson may not have mastered motorcycles, he’s certainly mastered the art of being roasted by his friends.
