A Perth court has sentenced the parents of a teenage ballerina to prison after years of neglect left her weighing just 60 pounds. The case, which has shocked Australia, revealed a pattern of malnutrition, isolation, and infantilization that left the girl physically stunted and emotionally dependent on her parents.

Despite their daughter’s emotional appeal for leniency, Judge Linda Black sentenced the father to six and a half years in prison and the mother to five years. The parents had forged their daughter’s birth certificate to conceal her severely underweight condition, raising further concerns about their motivations.

A Life of Control and Deprivation

The girl, who remains unnamed due to Australian privacy laws, was homeschooled and only allowed social interaction through ballet classes. Her media consumption was strictly limited to children’s programs like Teletubbies and Thomas the Tank Engine, reinforcing an unnatural state of arrested development.

“She was prevented from growing up,” said Judge Black. “You isolated her, controlled her diet, and kept her a little girl long beyond the age she should have been.”

Medical records presented in court showed that when the girl was finally hospitalized at 17, she had a body mass index of just 12.5—dangerously below the healthy range. Doctors observed brittle hair, dry flaking skin, and a body so malnourished she was at risk of cardiac arrest.

Yet, when medical professionals insisted on inserting a nasal feeding tube to save her life, her parents refused. Authorities had to intervene and place the girl into state care.

Parents Deny Starvation, Blame Vegan Diet

Throughout the trial, the parents maintained their innocence. The father’s defense attorney, Oliver Paxman, argued that the girl was simply a “fussy eater” who followed a vegetarian and vegan diet.

“My client didn’t starve his kid,” Paxman told the court. “He never withheld food. She was free to eat as much as she wanted, but her dietary choices led to inadequate nutrition.”

Judge Black, however, rejected this explanation. “Everyone around this girl could see she was malnourished—except the two people who claimed to love her most,” she stated.

Further undermining the parents’ claims was the discovery that they had altered official documents, lying about their daughter’s age, seemingly in an attempt to justify her small size.

Daughter’s Desperate Plea for Mercy

Now 20 years old, the girl remains financially dependent on her parents and pleaded with the court to drop the charges. In a heartfelt letter to the judge, she wrote, “I love my parents very much. They are the most important people in my life. If they go to prison, I don’t think I’ll be able to cope.”

She also detailed how her parents continue to support her financially, paying for her university tuition and living expenses.

However, Judge Black was unmoved, citing the parents’ complete lack of remorse. “You have shown no insight, no acceptance of responsibility,” she declared in her sentencing.

Legal Challenges Ahead

Following the verdict, Paxman stated that the father was “very disappointed” and was considering an appeal. The mother’s lawyer declined to comment, and the daughter has remained silent since the sentencing.

The case has sparked debate in Australia about parental control, medical neglect, and the responsibilities of caregivers. While the parents maintained they acted out of love, the court saw their actions as a disturbing failure to provide the most basic necessity: proper nutrition.

As the now-adult daughter struggles to reconcile her loyalty with the trauma of her upbringing, the legal battle may not be over yet.
