Russian political analysts once braced for a tense relationship with President Donald Trump following his return to the White House.
Now, their tone has shifted—from anxiety to elation. Trump’s latest policy decisions, particularly his new stance on foreign alliances and economic measures, are being celebrated in Moscow as a long-awaited turning point.
A Gift to the Kremlin?
During a recent broadcast of Sunday Evening With Vladimir Solovyov, one of Russia’s most prominent propagandists, Solovyov openly marveled at Trump’s recent trade war declarations. “It’s brilliant,” Solovyov exclaimed.
“Canada and Mexico thought they were safe—Trump just reminded them otherwise.” A clip of Trump announcing fresh tariffs on America’s closest neighbors triggered laughter across the studio.
For years, Russian analysts have speculated that Trump’s return to power could fracture U.S. alliances and weaken its global influence. Now, they believe those theories are being validated in real-time. Henry Sardaryan, Dean of the School of Governance and Politics at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, noted, “The U.S. is walking away from its global leadership role faster than we ever imagined.”
Ukraine Policy: A Strategic Realignment?
Trump’s stance on Ukraine has also sent waves of optimism through Russian political circles. After Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky is “illegitimate,” Trump’s envoy, retired General Keith Kellogg, urged Ukraine to hold new presidential elections despite the ongoing war. “Most democratic nations hold elections even in times of war,” Kellogg stated.
Solovyov pounced on the statement, interpreting it as an American concession to Russia’s narrative. “The fact that Kellogg is even acknowledging this,” he said, “shows that Washington is aligning more with our viewpoint than with Europe’s.”
Adding to the celebration, newly appointed U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made remarks that Russian commentators found strikingly familiar. Sardaryan, visibly excited, said, “I had to check multiple sources because I thought I was reading a statement from Sergey Lavrov, not an American Secretary of State.”
To Russian experts, Rubio’s words signaled the United States stepping away from its traditional role as Ukraine’s staunchest backer.
Media Strategy: Shifting the Narrative
Sardaryan also suggested that the Trump administration is using right-wing media to reshape American public perception of Ukraine.
He pointed to Tucker Carlson’s recent hard-hitting criticisms of Zelensky, calling it a deliberate attempt to prepare the U.S. for a policy shift. “They need to make the American people comfortable with an entirely different approach,” Sardaryan explained.
Dismantling USAID: A Boon for Moscow?
Beyond geopolitical realignment, Russian state media has expressed delight over the apparent dismantling of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which has long provided economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide.
Sardaryan argued that Russia should seize this opportunity to expand its own influence. “Foreign assistance should be a strategic tool, not just charity,” he emphasized. Solovyov agreed, calling it “a phenomenal lever” to extend Russian power in developing nations.
An Authoritarian Shift?
Not all Russian commentators are focused solely on foreign affairs. Political scientist Dmitry Evstafiev previously predicted that Trump’s second term would erode U.S. democratic institutions.
Now, Russian analysts say they see this happening in real time. Andrey Sidorov, Deputy Dean of World Politics at Moscow State University, observed, “America is moving towards a more centralized system—one that its citizens may soon find impossible to reverse.”
Meanwhile, with sanctions fears dissipating, Solovyov has reclaimed his status as Trump’s most ardent Russian supporter. “Everything happening in the U.S. right now is outstanding,” he declared. From Moscow’s perspective, Trump’s presidency is not just beneficial—it’s transformational.
