Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are speaking out against Mark Zuckerberg and Meta after the tech giant announced plans to eliminate fact-checking across its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, known for their advocacy on issues like mental health and online safety, issued a blistering critique of the decision through their Archewell Foundation website.

“In an already chaotic and often deliberately misleading digital landscape, Meta’s actions are a harmful step backward,” their statement reads. “This decision undermines free speech by amplifying abuse and misinformation, silencing meaningful voices in the process.”

Meta’s Decision Sparks Backlash

The controversy stems from Meta’s announcement that it will abandon its longstanding fact-checking program, introduced to curb misinformation. Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, framed the move as a push for “free expression.”

“It’s time to get back to our roots around free expression,” Zuckerberg said in a public statement, calling the upcoming 2024 election a “cultural tipping point.”

However, critics argue the policy shift prioritizes profit over public safety. Internally, some Meta employees expressed concerns, with one unnamed staffer reportedly calling the move “a capitulation to political pressure.”

The Sussexes Take a Stand

Harry and Meghan sharply criticized Zuckerberg’s rationale, stating that removing safeguards will harm vulnerable communities.

“Meta claims to build human connection, but their actions tell a different story,” the couple wrote. “This decision prioritizes those spreading hate and lies over the collective well-being of society.”

The Sussexes emphasized the potential global repercussions of this change. “For individuals and families still grappling with the harmful effects of unchecked social media, this is devastating,” they said, referencing their work on digital safety through initiatives like their Archewell Foundation’s mental wellness programs.

A History of Controversy

Meta’s fact-checking program, implemented in 2016, was designed to combat the surge of misinformation during the U.S. presidential election. The program partnered with third-party organizations to flag false content, but its critics have often accused the company of inconsistencies and bias.

Now, with this latest rollback, industry leaders are raising alarms about the implications for advertisers and users alike. Meta’s platforms, responsible for $135 billion in annual ad revenue, are increasingly under scrutiny.

Broader Implications

The Sussexes also called on other industry leaders to take a stand. “We urge Meta to reverse course and reinstate policies that protect users,” they said. “We applaud those who refuse to enable platforms that profit from division and hate.”

Their statement reflects broader concerns among digital safety advocates who warn that loosening restrictions could lead to a surge in hate speech and misinformation.

One tech policy expert, Sarah Blake, noted, “This isn’t just about free expression—it’s about the balance between profit and responsibility. Meta’s decision may have ripple effects for years to come.”

A Global Concern

As parents to Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, the Sussexes have long been vocal about the impact of social media on mental health and democracy. Their comments come at a time when public trust in social platforms is already fragile.

“Free expression is a cornerstone of democracy,” the couple concluded. “But hate speech is not free speech. We must hold platforms accountable for the consequences of their policies.”

With Zuckerberg defending his decision as a step toward greater openness, the debate over Meta’s role in shaping the digital public square is far from over.

  1. This gain new respect for them….anyway, anybody that seeks information and facts on social media are morons….then again, we live in a country of morons, a great departure from the wise and educated patriots that founded our country.
