Nancy Pelosi, the 84-year-old Democratic representative from San Francisco, returned to Congress on Friday with a noticeable change in her iconic style. Following a hip-replacement surgery in December, Pelosi swapped her trademark stilettos for a pair of practical light-blue flats, marking a significant shift in her public image.
Pelosi’s surgery came after a fall down a marble staircase in Luxembourg during a congressional trip. The fall resulted in a broken hip and required immediate medical attention. She underwent surgery in Germany, where her spokesperson assured the public that she was “well on the mend.”
Republican colleague Rep. Michael McCaul, who was with Pelosi at the time of the incident, recounted the moments leading up to her fall. “She likes to wear high heels, very high,” McCaul said. “She was on one of her last steps on this marble staircase that didn’t have a railing, and she lost her footing and fell to the ground.”
On the first day of the new Congress, Pelosi stepped onto the House floor to a standing ovation from her peers. Despite a visible limp, she was warmly greeted by colleagues from both sides of the aisle. Her light-blue flats, perfectly coordinated with a matching sweater tied around her neck and a bright-blue pantsuit, signaled a practical yet stylish adaptation to her recent surgery.
Pelosi briefly addressed reporters, stating she was feeling “fine” and eager to resume her duties. She cast her vote for Rep. Hakeem Jeffries as Speaker of the House, amid ongoing political battles over the role.
For over three decades, Pelosi’s stiletto heels have been as much a part of her identity as her political acumen. In a recent appearance on Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ podcast, recorded before her accident but released afterward, Pelosi discussed her love for high heels. She revealed that her suede stilettos are surprisingly comfortable. “They’re like bedroom slippers to me,” she said. “I’m not in my office long enough to take off my shoes. You touch base, do whatever it is. And out the door.”
Lawmakers praised Pelosi’s determination to return to work so quickly. “She’s a force of nature,” said Rep. Katherine Clark, a Massachusetts Democrat. “Even an injury can’t keep her away from serving her district and the country.”
Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy also commented, “While we’ve had our disagreements, her resilience is commendable. She’s setting an example for everyone here.”
As Pelosi adjusts to life post-surgery, her choice of footwear might symbolize a broader evolution. While her stilettos once underscored her commanding presence, her new flats signal adaptability and pragmatism—qualities that have defined her decades-long career.
Pelosi’s return is a testament to her enduring commitment to public service. Whether in stilettos or flats, she remains a formidable figure in Congress.
