Trump Picks ‘Fight’ with Pope by Picking Controversial Vatican Ambassador

President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Brian Burch, a conservative Catholic advocate and outspoken critic of Pope Francis, as the next U.S. ambassador to the Holy See.

The decision sets the stage for potential tensions between Washington and Vatican City.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump praised Burch as a “dedicated servant” of Catholic values and American ideals. “Brian loves his Church and his Country,” Trump wrote. “He’ll make us all proud.” The announcement coincided with Trump’s promotion of “God Bless the USA” Bibles, a signature move aligning religion and patriotism in his messaging.

Burch, a father of nine and president of CatholicVote.org, is well-known for his sharp critiques of progressive Catholic leadership. His book, A New Catholic Moment: Donald Trump and the Politics of the Common Good, portrays Trump as a transformative figure for Catholics in America.

Yet, his views have not always aligned with those of Pope Francis. Burch publicly condemned the pontiff’s decision to permit blessings for same-sex couples, calling it an affront to traditional Catholic teachings. He has also accused the Vatican of targeting conservative factions, including Latin Mass communities, amid broader cultural debates.

“Brian Burch is an agitator,” said Steven Millies, theology professor at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. “His appointment underscores the combative tone we’re likely to see between the Trump administration and Pope Francis.”

This nomination comes as Pope Francis continues to champion inclusivity and environmental justice—stances that have polarized conservative Catholics. Burch, by contrast, has aligned himself with Trump’s vision of a “traditional values” revival.

In a 2023 tweet, Burch derided what he called “progressive Catholic cheerleading,” accusing church leaders of veering too far left. His remarks followed controversies surrounding FBI investigations into “radical traditionalist” Catholic groups, which Burch suggested had tacit Vatican approval.

“I am committed to promoting dignity and the common good,” Burch said after his nomination. “I look forward to working with Vatican leaders on shared goals.”

Burch’s appointment comes as President Joe Biden plans a January visit to Pope Francis in what may be his final foreign trip as president. The White House described their recent phone call as “a discussion about advancing global peace during the holiday season.”

Analysts predict that U.S.-Vatican relations may be entering a contentious phase. “This is more than a diplomatic appointment,” Millies noted. “It’s a statement about the direction Trump wants to take Catholic advocacy.”

With contrasting visions on key issues, all eyes now turn to how Burch navigates his role in the heart of Vatican City. Will he foster dialogue or deepen divides?
