A peaceful Christmas market in Magdeburg turned into a scene of horror last night as a driver deliberately crashed into a crowd, leaving one dead and dozens injured.

The chaotic incident unfolded just after 7 PM Friday in the heart of the city, which lies between Hanover and Berlin.

Witnesses described the terrifying moment when a BMW sped down a crowded market corridor, hitting multiple pedestrians and sending others scrambling for safety. “It was like a war zone,” said an eyewitness who spoke with local outlet Mitteldeutsche Zeitung. “People were screaming and laying on the ground in agony.”

Emergency responders quickly arrived, setting up triage stations in the midst of the madness. “We saw people with serious injuries, and the scene was chaotic,” said a paramedic on the ground. “The market was full of families, and the shock is still sinking in.”

Authorities took the driver into custody shortly after the crash. Local officials suspect the act may have been intentional. “At this time, we believe this was not an accident,” a police spokesperson confirmed. The driver, whose identity has not been released, is reportedly cooperating with investigators.

Though police have yet to provide an official death toll, early estimates suggest between 60 to 80 people were injured, with at least one fatality confirmed. Emergency crews worked through the night to treat the wounded and stabilize the situation.

“The holiday spirit was shattered in an instant. People came here for joy, and instead, they’ve faced a nightmare,” said Thomas Richter, a local resident. “We can only pray for those who were hurt.”

As the investigation continues, residents of Magdeburg remain in shock. “It’s hard to comprehend that something like this could happen here,” said another witness, visibly shaken. Local officials have promised full support for the victims and their families, as the city grapples with the aftermath of this horrifying event.

Authorities are expected to release more details as the investigation unfolds.
