Republican Representative Anna Paulina Luna of Florida faced intense heckling on the House floor Thursday while delivering a speech about the looming government shutdown. Luna blamed Democrats for the chaos, but her claims were met with jeers that briefly silenced her.

The House session came after a dramatic day, with President-elect Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk derailing a bipartisan funding resolution that appeared close to approval. Luna stood firmly behind a scaled-back Republican proposal, using her speech to praise Trump.

“I never voted for a [continuing resolution], but I’m here today because I realize the plan that’s on the table currently to keep our government open,” Luna declared. She added, “This plan comes with the promise from the only president in my lifetime who has ever followed through on all of his campaign promises to the American people.”

Her words were drowned out by boos from the Democratic side.

“Excuse me! I’m not done talking. Give me the same respect we give you guys,” Luna fired back.

New York Rep. Marc Molinaro, acting as Speaker Pro Tempore, intervened, urging decorum. “My colleagues are reminded the gentlewoman has the floor and the right to be heard,” he said, banging the gavel.

Luna continued her speech, doubling down on her praise for Trump and blaming Democrats for any potential shutdown. “This deal stands as it is. So let you go back home on Christmas and explain to your people why you shut down the government because we won’t be doing it,” she said.

The House chamber erupted again when Luna claimed, “The deal on the table will keep the government open, but if you choose to shut it down, it will not be on the Republican Party.”

One controversial aspect of the revised bill involved cutting a program funding research for childhood cancer and disease—a move Luna described as necessary to protect fiscal priorities.

Her confidence was misplaced. Minutes after her fiery speech, the Republican-controlled House failed to pass the measure. The vote was 174-235, falling far short of the two-thirds majority required.

A central provision of the bill—a two-year suspension of the debt ceiling—was a demand from Trump, yet it failed to rally enough Republican support. Even with a simple majority requirement, the outcome would have been the same.

Democrats seized on the failure as evidence of GOP disarray. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic leader, remarked, “This is what happens when extremists prioritize chaos over governance. The American people deserve better.”

As the midnight Saturday deadline approaches, federal workers face the grim prospect of a shutdown. “It’s their livelihoods on the line while we’re playing political games,” said Rachel Alford, a nurse from Virginia who has seen previous shutdowns disrupt her family’s finances.

Meanwhile, Speaker Mike Johnson has not signaled a clear path forward. With time running out, Washington remains gridlocked, leaving Americans uncertain about the days ahead.

  1. Addressing the Democrps is liken to addressing a day care center. They all have battleship mouths and rowboat asses!

  2. If President Elon is going to trim government and eliminate the deficit, why do we need to expand the National Debt?
