In a fiery new chapter of the ongoing battle over the January 6 Capitol riot, GOP leaders have released a blistering 128-page report slamming the now-disbanded House Jan. 6 Committee.

The report accuses the committee, chaired by Democrats with two Republican members, of “political weaponization” and calls for a criminal investigation into former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), one of the panel’s most prominent voices.

“This committee was never about the truth,” the report claims. “Speaker Pelosi’s multimillion-dollar Select Committee was a partisan effort to deceive the public, smear President Trump, and tarnish his legacy.”

The report, led by Georgia Rep. Barry Loudermilk, levels serious accusations against Cheney, including claims of witness tampering involving former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson. GOP leaders also demand the FBI investigate Cheney’s actions during her tenure on the committee.

Cheney, however, isn’t backing down. In a sharp rebuttal, she dismissed the report as a “malicious and cowardly assault on the truth” while doubling down on her criticism of Donald Trump.

“January 6th exposed Donald Trump for who he truly is—a cruel and vindictive man,” Cheney said in a statement Tuesday. “He watched the violence unfold on television for hours and refused to act. That’s not leadership; it’s betrayal.”

Cheney didn’t hold back in condemning the report’s findings, calling them “fabricated lies designed to protect Donald Trump.”

“This report ignores overwhelming evidence and disrespects the rule of law,” Cheney continued. “No serious lawyer or judge would entertain these baseless allegations.”

The Jan. 6 Committee, formed in 2021, was tasked with investigating the Capitol riot and the actions leading up to it. Its final report, released in December 2022, pointed to Trump’s role in inciting the attack and recommended criminal charges against the former president.

The Republican-led counter-report paints a different picture, accusing the committee of overreach and partisanship. Trump himself has repeatedly called for the prosecution of committee members, even suggesting, “They should go to jail.”

Democratic leaders have voiced concern over what they see as a dangerous precedent. Over the weekend, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) floated the idea of preemptive pardons for Jan. 6 Committee members.

“Well, I think President Biden might want to consider that very seriously,” Sanders said during an interview on Meet the Press.

As the political drama escalates, questions linger about the long-term implications. Will the FBI heed the GOP’s demands for a criminal probe into Cheney? How might President-elect Trump’s return to power reshape accountability for the events of January 6?

Political analysts warn that the escalating rhetoric from both sides could further polarize an already divided nation. For Cheney, who sacrificed her political career to speak out against Trump, the stakes remain high.

“The truth is worth fighting for,” Cheney concluded. “Even if it costs everything.”
