Elon Musk’s growing influence over political affairs ignited controversy this week, with some Democrats dubbing the tech billionaire “President Musk” as his involvement in government negotiations eclipsed even President-elect Donald Trump.
Musk, alongside Trump, helped derail a critical bipartisan spending bill on Wednesday. The bill, which would have funded the government through March, was set to prevent a looming shutdown. Instead, their intervention left Congress scrambling to avert a crisis as the Christmas holiday approaches.
New York Representative Daniel Goldman minced no words on MSNBC, saying, “It’s not Donald Trump asking for this. It’s very clearly President Elon Musk asking for this.” Goldman went on to criticize Trump’s apparent deference to Musk. “Only after Musk publicly tweets his displeasure with this budget deal does Trump come trotting in, like Musk’s chief of staff, to blow it up.”
This sentiment was echoed by other Democratic leaders. Representative Pramila Jayapal of Washington took to X, formerly Twitter, writing, “It’s clear who’s in charge, and it’s not President-elect Donald Trump. Shadow President Elon Musk spent all day railing against Republicans’ CR, succeeded in killing the bill, and then Trump decided to follow his lead.”
Georgia Representative Hank Johnson joined the chorus, lambasting what he called “MAGA Musk Republicans.” On X, he posted: “Rather than serving the people who elected them by keeping the government open through the holidays, they’ve chosen to follow President-elect Musk’s order to SHUT IT DOWN! Folks, American democracy is in TROUBLE.”
On the Senate side, Bernie Sanders questioned whether Republicans were answering to Musk or the American people. In two separate posts, he used the term “President Musk” to underscore his concerns about the billionaire’s sway over the GOP.
Even Republican figures expressed unease. Former Congressman Adam Kinzinger quipped on CNN that the real hierarchy seemed to be “President Musk” and “Vice President Trump.” By late Wednesday, the term “Vice President Trump” was trending on X, the platform Musk owns.
Amid the online uproar, Musk and Trump dined together at Mar-a-Lago, reportedly joined by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. Whether the trending phrase “President Musk” came up at the table remains unknown, but political analysts speculate it’s unlikely Trump, known for his sensitivity to the spotlight, is taking the comparison lightly.
“Musk is playing a risky game,” said Wall Street Journal reporter Vivian Salama during a CNN appearance. “It’s very unusual to see someone in Trump’s orbit getting ahead of him on a critical issue. Musk’s public moves, while aligned with Trump’s goals, highlight a power dynamic that Trump may find threatening.”
The high-stakes showdown over the spending bill adds yet another layer of complexity to Musk’s burgeoning political role. Critics argue his actions blur the line between private influence and public governance, a tension that shows no sign of easing.
Meanwhile, congressional leaders face mounting pressure to reach a new agreement before government operations grind to a halt. As Christmas nears, the nation waits to see whether Musk’s influence—and Trump’s response to it—will further complicate the path forward.
