Mary Trump, estranged niece of President-elect Donald Trump and one of his most vocal critics, issued a grim warning on Saturday, declaring, “We’re doomed,” after a high-profile defamation lawsuit against ABC News was settled in Trump’s favor.
The lawsuit stemmed from a March broadcast of ABC’s This Week, during which anchor George Stephanopoulos stated that Trump had been “found liable for rape” in relation to E. Jean Carroll’s legal claims. While a New York civil jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation against Carroll in May 2023, it did not determine him guilty of rape under New York’s narrow legal definition.
To resolve the dispute, ABC News agreed to:
- Pay $15 million toward Trump’s presidential library fund.
- Issue a public apology and retract the inaccurate statement.
- Cover $1 million in legal fees for Trump’s attorneys.
In a statement, ABC News said, “We are pleased that the parties have reached an agreement to dismiss the lawsuit on the terms in the court filing.”
Mary Trump’s reaction came swiftly on social media. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), she wrote, “How many coloring books can $15 million buy? Also, we’re doomed.”
Her remarks, laced with sarcasm, reflect her longstanding skepticism about her uncle’s political influence and the potential consequences of his actions.
Donald Trump’s legal battles with Carroll are far from over. The former president is appealing verdicts that have already cost him:
- $5 million in damages for defamation in 2023.
- An additional $83.3 million ordered in January 2024 for further defamation claims.
Judge Lewis Kaplan, who oversaw Carroll’s cases, previously clarified that the jury’s decision hinged on the precise legal definition of “rape” under New York law. “The definition of rape in the New York Penal Law is far narrower than the meaning of ‘rape’ in common modern parlance,” Kaplan wrote in July. However, he stressed that this distinction did not diminish the jury’s conclusion of sexual abuse.
Mary Trump’s “we’re doomed” comment is not her first warning about her uncle’s political and social influence. Following Trump’s re-election in November, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris in a decisive victory, Mary Trump described the outcome as a “blow to the American experiment.”
In a YouTube video titled Understanding Trump’s Shocking Win – Mary Trump’s Path Forward, she urged Americans to brace for challenges ahead. “This was a tragic blow,” she said. “But we must remember that we have allies globally who share our values and are ready to support us in this fight.”
As Trump prepares for his second term, questions linger about how ongoing legal challenges and settlements will shape his presidency. Analysts note that cases like these highlight a complex intersection of law, politics, and public perception.
Meanwhile, Mary Trump’s warnings continue to resonate with a segment of Americans wary of her uncle’s impact on democratic norms. “There are dangers ahead,” she said in her November address. “But there are also people—at home and abroad—who understand the fight we face and stand ready to support us.”
With the settlement behind him, Donald Trump remains focused on the road ahead. Whether the “doomed” warning from his estranged niece will prove prescient or hyperbolic remains to be seen.
