Drones have repeatedly breached the airspace of Naval Weapons Station Earle, a critical military installation in Colts Neck, New Jersey, sparking mounting concern among local authorities. Despite no direct threats being identified, officials are ramping up efforts to secure the airspace amid an uptick in drone sightings across the region.
Bill Addison, the public affairs officer for the station, confirmed that multiple unidentified drones have flown over the facility. “We are aware of the ongoing incidents and are coordinating closely with federal and state agencies to ensure the safety of our personnel and operations,” Addison said. “While there’s been no immediate threat, we are prepared to act should any risks arise.”
The sightings have been a cause of concern for both local residents and elected officials. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy voiced his frustration in a letter to President Joe Biden, urging for greater federal resources to investigate the mysterious drone activity. “New Jersey residents deserve more concrete answers,” Murphy wrote, referencing the growing speculation and conspiracy theories online. “The lack of clear information has only fueled confusion and fear.”
Local law enforcement, including the New Jersey State Police, have been tracking these drone activities since November 18. However, residents in northern New Jersey, particularly in Morris and Somerset counties, have reported sightings of unusually large drones flying overhead late at night. Colts Neck, where the naval base is located, is in the heart of this drone activity zone.
On Thursday, Senator Andy Kim, newly sworn into office, visited Hunterdon County, where he personally observed dozens of drones flying overhead for over two hours. “The people deserve answers,” Kim declared, stressing the need for transparency. “We don’t need more speculation. We need action and a clear line of communication from those responsible for our safety.”
Kim, alongside other prominent legislators like Senators Chuck Schumer, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Cory Booker, has called for a federal investigation by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security. In a joint letter sent to federal officials, they expressed urgent concern over the drones’ proximity to critical infrastructure, including reservoirs and military sites like the Naval Weapons Station Earle.
The White House has attempted to downplay the situation, with National Security Communications Adviser John Kirby stating, “Many of the reported sightings seem to involve legally operated manned aircraft. We have not corroborated any evidence that these drones pose a national security threat.” He further noted that no foreign involvement has been detected, but investigations are ongoing.
Despite these reassurances, local leaders, including Kim, remain unconvinced. “It’s difficult for residents to feel safe when these drones are appearing without explanation,” Kim said after witnessing the drones himself. “The federal government needs to provide real answers, not vague statements.”
In Staten Island, tensions are running high as well. Borough President Vito Fossella has demanded that the NYPD investigate drone sightings over the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. “People across New Jersey, Staten Island, and beyond are being told to ignore what they’re seeing,” Fossella remarked during a press conference. “This is no longer a matter of doubt—it’s a matter of public concern, and the people deserve answers.”
Former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, too, has weighed in, revealing his own unsettling encounter with drones near his home in Davidsonville. Hogan shared a two-minute video on social media, showing what appeared to be dozens of drones hovering for nearly 45 minutes. “The public is increasingly frustrated with the federal government’s lack of transparency,” Hogan tweeted. “We need to know what these drones are, and why they’re here.”
As the investigation continues, one thing is clear: local officials and residents are growing restless, and they’re not ready to accept the silence from federal authorities. With conspiracy theories gaining traction, the pressure is on for the government to offer clarity on this mysterious aerial activity.
