A Florida kindergarten teacher’s death has prompted health officials to investigate a potential outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease at Pasadena Fundamental Elementary School.
Katherine Pennington, 61, passed away on November 24 after testing positive for Legionella, the bacteria responsible for the potentially fatal illness. She had been a beloved educator at the school for 36 years, known for her infectious enthusiasm and dedication to her students.
In response to Pennington’s death, seven classrooms at the school have been vacated, with students relocated to other areas of the building. Principal Donita Moody informed parents in a letter that repairs to the school’s air conditioning system are underway, along with air quality testing.
“In an abundance of caution, we are conducting comprehensive air quality assessments to ensure the safety of our students and staff,” Moody assured parents. “Once repairs are complete, students will return to their original classrooms.”
Legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia, is caused by inhaling droplets contaminated with the Legionella bacteria. It cannot be spread from person to person but often originates in water or soil sources, including cooling systems, fountains, or plumbing. Symptoms include fever, headaches, muscle aches, and shortness of breath, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Pennington’s passing has left a profound void in her community. Known for her love of gardening and weekend treasure hunts at garage sales, she also left a legacy of kindness and dedication to her students.
“Her laughter and sparkling personality were legendary,” her family shared in her obituary. “Kathy’s passion for teaching impacted countless lives. She will be dearly missed.”
The longtime teacher is survived by her daughter and three siblings.
Health officials and school administrators are closely monitoring the situation, with air quality tests expected to determine whether further action is needed. As repairs continue, parents and staff are urged to remain vigilant for symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease.
Pasadena Fundamental Elementary School has not issued an additional statement but pledged to keep families informed as new information becomes available.
