Mall Shooting Leaves 2 Injured on Black Friday

Black Friday shoppers at the bustling Park Plaza Mall were sent into a frenzy after gunfire erupted Friday afternoon, leaving two people injured in what police are calling an isolated incident.

The shooting occurred at 1:44 p.m., according to the Little Rock Police Department. Initial reports suggested three individuals were hurt, but officials later confirmed two people had been hospitalized, including one with gunshot wounds. Both victims are expected to survive.

What initially sparked fears of a mass shooting quickly shifted once officers arrived on the scene. “While it was first reported as a possible active shooter, officers quickly determined it was a disturbance between two individuals that escalated to gunfire,” the department said in a Friday evening update.

The Park Plaza Mall, a popular shopping destination in Little Rock, was packed with holiday shoppers eager to snag Black Friday deals. Witnesses described a scene of panic as the sound of gunshots echoed through the corridors.

“I was just leaving a store when I heard what sounded like firecrackers,” said Emily Ramirez, a shopper who was at the mall during the incident. “People started screaming and running for the exits. It was terrifying.”

Authorities swiftly locked down the mall, ushering patrons to safety and securing the area for investigation.

Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott Jr. condemned the violence and reassured the public that city officials are working closely with law enforcement.

The shooting is a grim reminder of the ongoing gun violence epidemic in America. According to data from the Gun Violence Archive, over 37,000 people have been injured by gun violence in 2024 alone, with nearly 15,000 fatalities.

Arkansas, in particular, has struggled with high rates of gun-related incidents. In 2023, the state reported 658 firearm-related deaths, placing it among the top 10 states for gun fatalities per capita.

Experts point to a combination of factors fueling the crisis, including lax gun laws, socioeconomic disparities, and insufficient mental health resources.

“Gun violence is a complex issue, deeply rooted in America’s history and culture,” said Dr. Michael Carter, a criminologist at the University of Arkansas. “Addressing it requires a multifaceted approach, from legislative reform to community intervention.”
