A tranquil Florida beachfront community was thrown into chaos early Thursday morning when a Connecticut man armed with multiple firearms unleashed a hail of gunfire, terrorizing residents for hours before being fatally shot by a sheriff’s sniper.

The suspect, identified as 56-year-old Joseph DiFusco, had been staying at the Kingston Shores condominiums near Ormond-by-the-Sea, an idyllic stretch of coastal Florida typically associated with retirees and vacationers. But peace shattered when DiFusco allegedly fired over 200 rounds into neighboring units and at responding officers, forcing a tense five-hour standoff that ended in his death.

“Armed to the Teeth”

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood described the scene as something out of a war zone.
“Probably fired over 200 rounds,” Chitwood told local media. “You could hear bullets whizzing over our heads, and we were 100 yards back.”

Deputies initially responded to a call from DiFusco around 4 a.m. He reported having suicidal thoughts but declined medical assistance. Two hours later, they were called back—this time to the sound of gunfire.

According to Chitwood, DiFusco had barricaded himself inside the Airbnb rental unit, armed with at least three firearms, including what appeared to be a high-powered rifle. Negotiations were futile.

“He was not going to negotiate,” Chitwood said. “Every time we tried to talk, he’d fire on us. He turned off his phone and was armed to the teeth.”

Fear and Evacuation

The gunfire forced a mass evacuation of neighboring residents, many of whom were jolted awake by the sound of gunshots ricocheting off walls and shattering windows.

Images released by authorities show exterior walls riddled with bullet holes. One resident, who asked not to be named, said, “It was like living through a nightmare. We had to grab our kids and run.”

Even more disturbing, DiFusco’s own family had warned authorities.

“They were so scared of him, they were sleeping in a car,” Chitwood revealed. DiFusco had reportedly stopped taking his prescribed medication and hadn’t slept for days, a combination that may have fueled the violent outburst.

The Standoff and Final Shot

As the hours dragged on, deputies called in a trained sniper. With residents’ lives at stake and no sign of DiFusco surrendering, the sniper took the fatal shot, ending the siege.

Sheriff Chitwood defended the decision. “This could’ve been much worse. He left us no choice.”

Authorities are now investigating how DiFusco obtained the firearms and whether they were legally transported from Connecticut. The incident adds to growing concerns over gun violence in Florida, a state already grappling with rising tensions over firearm regulations.

A Troubling Trend

This tragedy comes on the heels of several high-profile shootings in the state. Just days earlier, a Texas Thanksgiving gathering turned deadly, leaving two dead and two injured in what authorities described as a domestic dispute.

Florida lawmakers have faced increasing pressure from residents to address gun control measures, particularly concerning mental health and firearm access. Local activist Sarah Martinez, speaking from nearby Daytona Beach, said, “We can’t keep living like this. Our communities deserve safety, and it’s time our leaders took action.”

As the community of Ormond-by-the-Sea grapples with the trauma, one thing is clear: the idyllic Florida coast has become yet another battleground in America’s ongoing struggle with gun violence.

“When will it end?” asked one shaken resident. “We moved here for peace, and now we don’t know if it’s safe anymore.”
