Jean Rather, the wife of legendary CBS news anchor Dan Rather, has passed away at the age of 89 following a long battle with cancer. Her death was confirmed Tuesday evening in a heartfelt post shared on her husband’s Facebook page.

“She had been on hospice care for some time,” the statement read, “but the news still comes as a shock for those of us who knew and loved her.”

Born in the small town of Smithville, Texas, Jean met Dan Rather in the 1950s while working at a Houston radio station. The two married in 1957 and embarked on a whirlwind life together, navigating the fast-paced world of journalism and public life.

Their journey took them across the United States and beyond. After decades of living in New York, the couple returned to Texas in 2021, settling near family. But no matter where life took her, Jean’s Texas roots remained a defining part of her character.

“She never forgot where she came from,” the obituary reads, “and never wavered from her fierce independence and endless creativity.”

A Partner, Mother, and Artist in Her Own Right

While Dan Rather became a household name as the face of CBS Evening News, Jean built an impressive legacy of her own. She was a gifted artist with a distinctive contemporary style, shaped by the couple’s travels to Europe, Asia, and beyond.

For eight years, Jean served as a painter member and vice chair of the Art Commission of the City of New York, leaving her mark on the city’s cultural landscape. She also lent her talents to various non-profits, including the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and the Harry Ransom Center.

“She was the kind of wife who could meet presidents, kings, and queens with equal grace and a stunning smile,” the obituary continued. “Yet she remained grounded, meeting everyday people with the same warmth and ease.”

Jean was also a dedicated mother to the couple’s two children, Danjack and Robin, who have pursued careers in law and education, respectively. Both families were by her side during her final days.

A Legacy of Strength Behind a Broadcasting Titan

Dan Rather, now 93, is widely regarded as one of the most influential news anchors in American history. He succeeded Walter Cronkite as host of CBS Evening News and became a trusted voice during some of the nation’s darkest hours, from the assassination of President John F. Kennedy to the 9/11 attacks.

Through it all, Jean remained his “rock,” offering counsel and stability during the high-pressure moments of his career. “Jean was a steadfast advisor and a woman of true Texas grit during every storm,” the tribute stated.

In recent years, as the media landscape shifted and public trust in journalism wavered, Dan Rather emerged as a vocal advocate for truth and integrity in news. His 2017 essay collection, What Unites Us, became a rallying cry for those seeking steady, fact-based reporting in a time of division.

Jean Rather is survived by her husband of 66 years, Dan Rather, their children Danjack and Robin, and their beloved grandchildren. In her passing, she leaves behind a legacy of creativity, resilience, and grace—a fitting tribute to a life well-lived.

“She was our North Star,” the family wrote. “Jean’s light will continue to guide us, even as we mourn her loss.”

Funeral arrangements will be private, with a public memorial service planned for early next year.
