Late Queen Elizabeth II was reportedly far from impressed with former President Donald Trump during his 2018 visit to the United Kingdom. According to insiders, Trump’s comments about Princess Margaret struck a nerve with the monarch, who passed away in 2022 at age 96.
Sources allege Trump, 78, made an offhand remark about Margaret, asking the Queen if her younger sister had been “difficult.” Margaret, known for her spirited personality and turbulent personal life, passed away in 2002.
“Trump put his foot in it by saying Margaret must have been a difficult sister,” a source revealed. “The Queen was very annoyed with this remark, which she found ignorant and hurtful. She always defended Margaret fiercely.”
While the reason for Trump’s comment is unclear, Princess Margaret has long been a polarizing figure in royal history. On the Netflix series The Crown, she is portrayed as a rebellious royal who defied convention with her romance with Group Captain Peter Townsend, a divorced war hero.
The former president’s visit was marred by other alleged missteps. In A Voyage Around The Queen, author Craig Brown claims the Queen “particularly disliked” the way Trump appeared to look over her shoulder during their interactions, as if searching for someone more interesting.
“She also speculated that Trump must have had ‘some sort of arrangement’ with his wife, Melania, because she couldn’t imagine why else she would stay married to him,” Brown wrote.
Despite these claims, Trump maintains he had a warm relationship with the late monarch. “I heard I was her favorite president,” he once claimed. “She liked me, and I liked her. She was an amazing woman.”
Trump even weighed in on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to step back from royal duties, suggesting it deeply upset the Queen. “I would imagine that broke her heart,” Trump told GB News in a 2021 interview. “She was strong and smart, but hearing those things at her age must have been devastating.”
Eric Trump, the former president’s son, echoed his father’s sentiments about the Queen. “My father had so much respect for her. My mom knew many members of the royal family, and they had a great relationship with Diana,” he told GB News.
While Trump’s version of events paints a cordial picture, reports suggest the Queen had a more reserved opinion of the controversial leader. Her discretion in such matters, however, means the full story may never be known.
