Former CNN anchor John Avlon, who recently failed in his bid to unseat Republican Rep. Nick LaLota in New York’s 1st Congressional District, isn’t holding back. In a fiery appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Avlon called out his own party, branding Democrats as the “default party of the status quo.”

Avlon, defeated by over ten points, said the Democratic Party is losing touch with voters’ priorities. “They can’t just be the party that defends the way things are,” he warned. “That’s a dangerous place to be.”

Election Woes Beyond Avlon

Avlon’s remarks come as Democrats grapple with losses beyond his district. Pennsylvania’s Senate race, a Democrat stronghold, saw Sen. Bob Casey lose to Republican Dave McCormick after weeks of counting. MSNBC hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski labeled the defeat a “wake-up call.”

When asked for his analysis, Avlon invoked Bill Clinton’s words: “People will vote for strong and wrong every time.” He criticized Democrats for failing to appear strong on core issues. “Personal safety and economic security – those are the fundamentals, and Democrats aren’t coming across as bold on either.”

The GOP’s Offense vs. Democrats’ Defense

Avlon argued that Republicans’ aggressive messaging resonates more with voters, while Democrats appear stuck in defense mode. “Voters will take a chance on bold solutions. If Democrats don’t lead on reform, they’ll keep losing ground,” he said.

He also highlighted a growing sense of “civic decline” among Americans. “People feel the country is falling apart, and Democrats need to step up and offer leadership. Otherwise, they’ll keep getting swept away by these waves.”

Economic and Safety Concerns Dominate

Scarborough pressed Avlon on whether Democrats should focus more on the GOP’s so-called “authoritarian” leanings and Donald Trump’s divisive rhetoric. Avlon didn’t flinch. “Those issues matter, but they’re not as urgent as affordability and safety,” he countered.

“If people don’t feel economically secure or physically safe, nothing else will matter,” he added. “Democrats need to get the basics right, or risk irrelevance.”

As Democrats reflect on their midterm losses, voices like Avlon’s highlight a key challenge: staying relevant in a political climate increasingly shaped by bold, populist rhetoric.
