Bullets Strike Southwest Airlines Plane in Dallas as Passengers Brace for Takeoff

In a shocking incident Friday night, a Southwest Airlines plane preparing for takeoff at Dallas Love Field was struck by a stray bullet.

The Dallas Police Department responded to reports of gunfire at 9:48 p.m., and a subsequent investigation revealed that a bullet had pierced the right side of the aircraft, just below the flight deck. Thankfully, no passengers or crew were harmed.

Passengers aboard Southwest Airlines flight 2494, bound for Indianapolis, were understandably shaken. The plane, taxiing for departure, quickly returned to the terminal, where passengers were rerouted onto another flight. Southwest Airlines confirmed, “The aircraft was hit just below the flight deck during pre-takeoff preparations.” The incident led to brief runway closures, though the airport swiftly resumed regular operations.

As of this morning, the shooter remains at large, and the Dallas Police Department has taken the lead in an ongoing investigation. A department spokesperson told Newsweek, “Officers arrived to find the aircraft had been struck by a single bullet. We are pursuing leads and will provide updates as they come.”

This alarming episode follows a string of recent incidents involving Southwest, raising fresh questions about the airline’s safety protocols. Only hours earlier, a separate Southwest flight out of Denver was evacuated after a passenger’s cellphone battery burst into flames, causing minor injuries. That plane, a Boeing 737-700, remained docked at the gate, and the FAA has since launched an investigation.

“These back-to-back incidents are troubling,” said aviation analyst Richard Carlton. “We’re seeing a pattern that suggests a need for deeper safety evaluations, not just on technical maintenance but on security readiness as well.”

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has already been monitoring Southwest closely since July when a flight narrowly avoided disaster, descending to just 150 feet above the water during an approach to Tampa. This near-miss spurred the FAA to launch a broader safety audit, casting a critical eye on the airline’s operational procedures. With recent issues piling up, calls for accountability may grow louder.
