A pro-life senior pastor of a Baptist megachurch in Texas came out in support of Vice President Kamala Harris in a new op-ed over the weekend.
For decades, Pastor John McIntyre was a steadfast supporter of the Republican Party.
As a longtime senior pastor at Cornerstone Church in Arlington, Texas, he believed that the GOP was the only party that aligned with his Christian values, particularly when it came to traditional marriage, pro-life principles, and faith-based ethics.
But in an unexpected shift, McIntyre has now come forward to announce his support for Democrat Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election. His decision marks a profound change, and it speaks volumes about his disappointment in the GOP’s evolution and its chosen leader, Donald Trump.
“I held this belief for the better part of 40 years,” McIntyre shared. “I saw Democrats endorsing agendas I couldn’t agree with—advocating for same-sex marriage, promoting abortion rights, and elevating figures like Bill Clinton, whose scandals and impeachment shook the nation.”
In McIntyre’s view, the Democratic Party of the past seemed at odds with the values he taught from the pulpit. For him, the GOP was the “party of faith,” its platform a reflection of biblical morals. In 2005, McIntyre even stood alongside Texas Governor Rick Perry, publicly supporting a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage and speaking against the idea that gay rights were comparable to civil rights.
However, the pastor says that the Republican Party has changed, and today he hardly recognizes it. The once staunchly pro-life platform no longer includes a call for a national abortion ban, and language defining marriage as “between one man and one woman” has disappeared entirely. “The party I knew and loved would have never chosen Donald Trump as its leader,” he stated. “This is a man with multiple marriages, whose actions, lies, and court cases go against everything we teach in the church.”
The breaking point for McIntyre came when many evangelical leaders, whom he once respected, not only overlooked Trump’s controversies but actively endorsed him. “Evangelical leaders rightly called out Clinton’s actions with Monica Lewinsky,” McIntyre noted. “But now those same leaders turn a blind eye to Trump’s legal and moral failings. He was found liable in court for sexual abuse, and yet some of my colleagues still support him.”
McIntyre’s disillusionment with Trump goes beyond the scandals. He recalls the violent undertone that Trump’s rhetoric often brings. A 2020 ABC News investigation revealed 54 cases where Trump was linked to violent threats or actions. The storming of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, marked a turning point for McIntyre. “That day, Trump called it a ‘day of love,’ but what we saw was chaos, violence, and rebellion,” he said. “I cannot imagine a President Harris ever leading her supporters to such actions.”
While McIntyre’s stance on social issues remains firm—he still believes in traditional marriage and protecting life in the womb—his priorities have shifted. “Character matters,” he explained, likening his vote to a hiring decision. “I’ve hired many people over the years—counselors, contractors, custodians. If Kamala Harris’ résumé came across my desk, I’d hire her without a second thought,” he remarked. McIntyre described Harris as someone of integrity, respect, and humility, traits he finds sorely lacking in Trump.
Citing a passage from Matthew 7:19, McIntyre spoke to his fellow evangelicals: “A tree that doesn’t bear good fruit should be cut down and cast into the fire. That’s how we should view today’s Republican Party.” While he respects that others may vote differently, McIntyre says he can no longer ignore the blatant contradictions between Trump’s character and his faith.
“For me, this election is about finding someone worthy of leadership,” McIntyre concluded. “And for the first time in over 40 years, that means voting for a Democrat. Kamala Harris is the leader our country needs right now.”
