In a stunning twist just three days out from Election Day, Vice President Kamala Harris has surged ahead of former President Donald Trump in Iowa—a state long considered safely Republican territory.

Despite not being a key battleground, this last-minute poll from The Des Moines Register/Mediacom shows Harris leading Trump with 47% of the vote to Trump’s 44%, a turnaround that few saw coming.

This polling upset is even more remarkable considering Trump’s previous commanding leads in the state. A Register/Mediacom poll in September gave Trump a solid 4-point advantage, and back in June, he was dominating with an 18-point lead over then-opponent Joe Biden.

Now, as the election nears, Harris has defied expectations in Iowa, a state Trump won handily by nine points in 2016 and eight points in 2020.

“It’s hard for anybody to say they saw this coming,” said J. Ann Selzer, the renowned pollster and president of Selzer & Co., who conducted the survey. “She has clearly leaped into a leading position.” Selzer’s polls have long been trusted for their accuracy, making this last-minute shift all the more shocking.

For Harris, this Iowa boost marks a pivotal moment as she seeks to solidify her appeal in traditionally red states. While her campaign has put much of its resources into battlegrounds like Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, her surprising Iowa showing could prove advantageous in tightening Trump’s overall lead in Republican strongholds.

The Voter Landscape: Who’s Gaining, Who’s Losing

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., once running an independent campaign before throwing his support behind Trump, remains a wildcard on the Iowa ballot. According to the Register’s poll, Kennedy now captures just 3% of the vote, down from 6% in September and 9% in June. This dip underscores Trump’s difficulties in retaining even conservative-leaning independents as Election Day approaches.

The Register poll, which surveyed 808 likely Iowa voters between October 28-31, has a margin of error of ±3.4 percentage points. Among respondents, nearly all had already voted or expressed firm intentions to cast their ballots on Tuesday, adding weight to the poll’s findings.

A minor slice of Iowa voters—under 1%—indicated support for Libertarian candidate Chase Oliver, a figure unlikely to shift the results significantly. However, every percentage point counts in a race this tight, especially if Harris continues to erode Trump’s base in traditionally conservative areas.

Iowa’s Historic Shift and What’s at Stake

For Republicans, an unexpected loss in Iowa would mark a significant blow. As a state that handed Trump decisive wins in the last two elections, a Harris victory here would signal waning confidence in Trump’s leadership even among his most steadfast supporters. Political analysts suggest that Trump’s dominance is being challenged by mounting concerns over his legal troubles, policy inconsistencies, and erratic rhetoric, factors that may be swaying undecided voters in the final stretch.

As the campaigns keep their focus on must-win swing states like Georgia, Arizona, and Pennsylvania, Iowa has largely flown under the radar. Both campaigns have avoided major ad spending in the state, assuming it would lean predictably Republican. However, this latest polling bombshell suggests that Harris’s appeal may be resonating more broadly, particularly among young voters, suburban women, and independents dissatisfied with Trump’s recent statements.

Could Iowa become a turning point? With Harris’s support growing in unlikely places and Trump’s advantage slipping, the last days before the election are poised for an intense showdown that might shift the narrative—and possibly the map.

Harris’s sudden surge in Iowa has set the stage for a nail-biting election night, where no vote can be taken for granted.
