Just weeks before the presidential election, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., endorsed former President Trump. However, a new book reveals McConnell’s sharp criticisms of Trump, describing him as “not very smart, irascible, [and] nasty.”
Despite these remarks, McConnell told Fox News Digital, “Whatever I may have said about President Trump pales in comparison to what JD Vance, Lindsey Graham, and others have said, but we are all on the same team now.”
The forthcoming biography, The Price of Power, by Michael Tackett, includes McConnell’s private comments on Trump. In the book, McConnell called Trump a “sleazeball” in 2022, after Trump attacked McConnell’s wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, with derogatory remarks.
Throughout the biography, McConnell reportedly referred to Trump as “stupid,” “erratic,” a “despicable human being,” and a “narcissist.”
Despite this, McConnell endorsed Trump in March, acknowledging his support among Republican voters. The two even shook hands during a summer meeting with Senate Republicans in Washington, D.C.
After the 2020 presidential election and before the January 6 Capitol riot, McConnell reportedly said, “It’s not just the Democrats who are counting the days” until Trump left office. He also praised voters for ousting Trump, stating, “They’ve had just enough of the misrepresentations, the outright lies almost on a daily basis, and they fired him.”
McConnell also blamed Trump for Republicans losing the House majority in 2018. Reflecting on Trump’s persistent election fraud claims, McConnell said, “Unfortunately, about half the Republicans in the country believe whatever he says.”
Earlier this year, McConnell announced he would not seek the Senate leadership role again. After serving as the Republican leader since 2007, McConnell holds the record for longest-serving party leader in Senate history. Following the upcoming election, Senate Republicans will vote in a secret ballot to choose their next leader, with John Thune, John Cornyn, and Rick Scott as the main candidates.
