A man arrested with a loaded gun outside a Donald Trump rally in California has denied any plans to assassinate the former president. Vem Miller, 49, from Las Vegas, was taken into custody on Saturday at a checkpoint near the rally in Coachella Valley.
Authorities say Miller was found with a shotgun, a loaded handgun, a high-capacity magazine, multiple passports, driver’s licenses with different names, and was driving an unregistered vehicle with a homemade license plate.
Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco suggested that the arrest may have prevented a potential assassination attempt. “We probably stopped another assassination attempt,” Bianco said, referencing two previous incidents involving suspected attempts on Trump’s life in recent months.
In July, Trump sustained minor injuries when a gunman opened fire at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Another potential assassination attempt was thwarted at Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, in September.
Despite the sheriff’s remarks, Miller strongly denied any ill intentions. Speaking to Fox News Digital, he emphasized his support for Trump. “I’m 100 percent a Trump supporter,” Miller said. “I’ve never even shot a gun in my life. I don’t know anything about guns.” Miller claimed he routinely carries firearms in his truck for protection but has no violent intentions.
Unnamed sources within Trump’s campaign told Fox News they do not believe the incident was an assassination attempt.
Miller was arrested on suspicion of illegal possession of firearms and a high-capacity magazine. According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, the incident did not pose a threat to Trump or attendees. In a statement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Secret Service, and FBI confirmed that Trump was never in danger, and while no federal charges have been filed yet, the investigation continues.
Miller, who was released on $5,000 bail, is scheduled to appear in court in January. He explained that the firearms were for self-defense after receiving death threats related to his work in media. Miller, the founder of the America Happens Network, produces politically charged content critical of mainstream media. He also denied claims that he is associated with far-right or anti-government movements, stating, “I’m not part of any of that.”
Sheriff Bianco, however, remains firm in his belief that the arrest may have prevented a serious threat. “If we are that politically lost that we can’t question why someone showed up with loaded guns, we have a serious problem in this country,” Bianco said during a press conference.
Miller’s partner, Mindy Robinson, also defended him on social media, calling the assassination accusations absurd. “There isn’t a universe where his intention was to kill Trump,” she posted on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing Miller’s commitment to exposing the so-called “Deep State.”
The investigation into the incident continues, but as of now, no federal charges have been brought against Miller.
