At the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner—a long-standing New York City event known for its humor and playful political roasts—Donald Trump took the stage Thursday night and delivered a speech that quickly became the evening’s most talked-about moment.
What is typically a night of good-natured jabs among political leaders turned into a fiery, profanity-laced performance, with Trump airing grievances about his legal battles and taking sharp swipes at key political figures.
In a 30-minute speech, Trump criticized President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and the transgender community. His remarks alternated between humor and scathing commentary, with Harris becoming a frequent target, as she was absent from the event due to a scheduling conflict.
“I was shocked Kamala was skipping this dinner,” Trump quipped. “I really wanted to hear that laugh of hers. You know, the one that sounds like she’s lost her mind.” He followed up with another jab at Harris, saying, “We have someone in the White House who can barely put together two coherent sentences—oh wait, I’m talking about Kamala Harris.”
Trump’s speech took a controversial turn when he made remarks that were seen as transphobic, joking that Schumer might still become the “first woman president” due to his party’s progressive stance. Later, Trump added another dig when discussing Harris’ running mate, saying, “I used to think Democrats were crazy with this whole ‘men can have periods’ thing, but then I met Tim Walz.”
The dinner, traditionally a high-profile charity event benefiting Catholic causes, has often served as a last joint appearance for presidential candidates before elections. However, Trump’s performance, filled with sharp insults and profanities, broke from the event’s usual tone. Even Cardinal Dolan, seated between Trump and Schumer, witnessed the former president’s raw approach, with Trump declaring, “I don’t give a s— if this is comedy or not.”
In typical fashion, Trump didn’t hold back when it came to himself. “I’m supposed to tell a few self-deprecating jokes,” he said. “But why would I? Everyone’s been taking shots at me for years.”
Trump closed by comparing his hardships to those of Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Jackson, saying, “No president has ever been treated worse than me,” bringing the evening to a dramatic conclusion that left the room buzzing long after the speeches ended.
