In a chilling and mysterious turn of events, the body of 35-year-old Dustin Kjersem was discovered at a remote campsite near Big Sky, Montana, on October 12th. The scene was so gruesome that the initial 911 call reported what appeared to be a bear attack. However, authorities now believe Kjersem was the victim of a brutal murder.
Kjersem had ventured into the Montana wilderness for a weekend of camping, last contacting his family on the afternoon of October 10th. When he failed to meet a friend as planned on Friday, his friend went searching for him, eventually finding his lifeless body inside a tent on Saturday morning. The horrific injuries led his friend to believe a bear had attacked him—a plausible assumption in an area where bear encounters aren’t uncommon.
But something didn’t add up.
Upon inspection by local law enforcement and a Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks expert, there were no signs of bear activity. The mystery deepened when an autopsy revealed Kjersem’s injuries were not from an animal but from what police described as “multiple chop wounds.”
“We’re treating this as a homicide,” Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer stated in a press conference, leaving the community on edge. While it’s still unclear if there’s an immediate danger to the public, Springer urged those spending time in the area to stay alert: “Someone out there committed a heinous act.”
Kjersem’s death has sent shockwaves through his community. Born and raised in Bozeman, Montana, he was a hardworking tradesman known for his dedication to family and his love for the outdoors. “He was a loving, helpful, and adoring father who in no way deserved this,” his sister Jillian Price said in a tearful plea for information that might lead to the capture of his killer.
The investigation is ongoing, with police urging anyone who was in the Moose Creek area at the time to come forward with any dash cam footage or tips. While the campsite is remote, it’s frequented by hunters and outdoor enthusiasts, raising hopes that someone may have seen or heard something that could provide a crucial lead.
For now, Montana remains gripped by this unsettling mystery, as authorities work around the clock to solve the case and bring justice for Kjersem and his grieving family.
