In a heartwarming story that shines a light on the power of community and human compassion, a veteran MTA bus driver, Luis Jimenez, is being hailed as a hero after taking swift action to protect a vulnerable child wandering alone in Manhattan.

Jimenez, 60, was driving his morning shift on the crosstown M116 when he noticed something deeply unsettling: a 5-year-old girl walking alone on the busy streets of the Upper West Side. As a father and grandfather, Jimenez’s protective instincts immediately kicked in. “My instinct as a father came on because if I see a kid in the street in need of help, I would want somebody to help one of my children or one of my grandkids,” he shared with ABC 7 New York.

On a day when Jimenez had considered calling out sick, fate had other plans. Spotting the child near W. 106 Street and Broadway, he knew he had to act quickly. Jimenez made sure to keep an eye on the little girl as she darted between the sidewalk and the street, clearly lost and alone.

In a culture where we’re often told to “see something, say something,” Jimenez chose to go a step further. “With me, I will do something,” he said, emphasizing his determination to help in moments of crisis.

After alerting a passenger to call 911, Jimenez skillfully pulled the bus over and, with the help of his concerned passengers, convinced the girl to board the bus for her safety while they waited for police to arrive. The bus’s surveillance footage shows both Jimenez and the passengers watching anxiously as the child navigated the sidewalk before she was safely lifted onto the bus by an adult.

As it turned out, the young girl had managed to slip away from her school and wandered 10 blocks in search of a pet store—she had recently lost her pet fish and was determined to replace it. Thankfully, authorities were able to reunite her with her family soon after, with no harm done.

Jimenez’s act of kindness didn’t go unnoticed, but for him, it was all about making a difference in a world that often feels bleak. “Times are hard, and there’s things happening every day… even though it’s negative all over the world going on, we have to go ahead and make a difference,” he said. Reflecting on the little girl’s quest for a new pet, Jimenez added with a smile, “If she didn’t get it, we should help out and try to get it for her.”

In an era where the news can sometimes feel overwhelming, stories like this remind us that everyday heroes are all around us—people like Luis Jimenez who step up, not because they have to, but because they care.

Jimenez said he hopes the girl got her new pet and suggested he would help if she hadn’t.
