Melania Trump has recently taken to X (formerly known as Twitter) to discuss her restoration of the White House Rose Garden, a project that has sparked considerable debate since its completion. In her posts, she promotes her upcoming book, Melania, which details her experiences and decisions during this renovation.

The Rose Garden, originally designed by former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy in the early 1960s, is a significant and historic feature of the White House grounds. Melania’s renovation in 2020 drew widespread criticism for what many viewed as a dramatic alteration of an iconic American landscape. Her changes included removing many of the original plants and features, leading to accusations of “eviscerating” Jackie Kennedy’s vision.

In a recent video shared on her X account, Melania expressed her feelings about the renovation process. “When the committee for the preservation of the White House asked me to renovate the Rose Garden, I felt a deep responsibility to respect tradition and to preserve its grandeur for future generations,” she stated. She emphasized that her book will recount the journey of the restoration and the efforts her team undertook to maintain the garden’s historical significance.

While Melania showcased images of the newly landscaped area and promoted her book, she did not address the backlash that followed her renovation. The criticism intensified particularly because the work began during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when many were focused on health and safety issues. In the wake of the changes, a petition garnered over 50,000 signatures urging then-First Lady Jill Biden to restore the garden to its “former glory.” The petition criticized Melania’s design choices, labeling them as “a boring tribute to herself” and expressed a sense of loss over Jackie Kennedy’s legacy, stating, “Jackie’s legacy was ripped away from Americans who remembered all that the Kennedys meant to us.”

Historian and author Michael Beschloss commented on the renovation, sharing a photo of the garden and stating, “Evisceration of White House Rose Garden was completed a year ago this month, and here was the grim result—decades of American history made to disappear.” This commentary reflects the broader sentiments expressed by critics who feel that the changes disregarded the historical and cultural significance of the space.

In response to the criticism, Melania took to her own social media platforms, defending her actions. She labeled Beschloss as “ignorant and dishonorable,” suggesting that his comments lacked an understanding of her intentions and the work involved in the renovation.

As Melania prepares to release her book on October 8, it remains to be seen how the public will respond to her reflections on this highly scrutinized project. Her renovation of the Rose Garden continues to be a polarizing topic, illustrating the complex intersection of public sentiment, historical preservation, and personal legacy within the realm of American politics and culture.
